Why does the MOXF USB link slow down speed and pitch of Cubase audio tracks?

My bandmates asked me to complete some previously created audio tracks which they recorded with Cubase Elements 8. I loaded the appropriate Yamaha / Steinberg driver and hooked up my MOXF-8 to my laptop via the USB interface. I was able to listen to the Cubase tracks as well as to my keys' tunes by using a pair of headphones wich I plugged into the MOXF's headphone socket.

Everything was fine so far except the fact that when pressing the Cubase PLAY button the speed and pitch of the recordings was lowered dramatically. After removing the USB link and restarting Cubase, the playback speed was back to normal again. What's the reason for the playback being slowed down so badly when using the MOXF's USB connection? Any clue highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Best regards, Chris

This can happen when you record at one sample rate and playback at a different sample rate.
If I were to ask you what sample rate you recorded your session, and what sample rate you are playing it back, I bet we discover a difference, or the quintessential "I don't know"

Either one can cause this issue.

What sample rate did you record your session?

Wow - you hit the point: The recordings were done with a sampling rate of 96 kHz / 24 Bit. Since the MOXF's USB Interface supports a sampling rate of 44,1 kHz / 24 Bit only, I simply had to click the field "recording format" at the Cubase header line. This opened a window with the project settings allowing me to choose the 44,1 kHz rate. Cubase then asked whether to save the original tracks and started converting, which took less than two minutes per song. Everything is fine by now. Thanks a lot, Bad Mister - "you saved my day"...;o)
