I'm trying to set up a 'music quiz' using montage where I try to play a small intro section of a song ...live on montage, the quizzers try to guess the song and then I then I want to play a clip of the 'real artist' version using the montage audio section.

So I have say about 10 different WAV files on a usb stick and want to assign each one to the relevant performance.

example: I play a bit of the Elton John's 'Rocket Man' intro...they guess it and then I want to play a WAV file clip of the real Elton John version.

Problem is that Montage keeps assigning the the last WAV I called up rather than the actual one I want.

i.e my second quiz song is say Queens Bohemian Rhapsody which I attempt live but then when I call up the WAV of this...I still get 'Rocket Man' rather that 'Bohemian Rhapsody!

So it seems you can't correctly assign that WAV you want to the correct performance?

Any ideas...seems a bit bonkers!

How are you "calling up" WAV files? I do not have the best idea of what exactly you're doing to know how to explain what's happening. Lack of detail.

If you use audio+Performance in the live set then you would need to use the Live set to select your Audio+Performance and you can use the audio transport to play the wav file.

A more universal way to do this without having to worry about the mode of the instrument would be to import the WAV file into a Waveform (your custom waveform) as a drum key in a drum Part. Assign a key you do not play on the piano for the demo OR use scene control to switch off the drum Part when you are doing the piano. This would save the "wav" file inside your Performance. Then you would press a piano key (for the drum kit sample of your song) to play the "real song" answer to the quiz.

So it seems you can't correctly assign that WAV you want to the correct performance?

What you want to happen can happen; you’ll want to:
_ recall the Performance “Rocket Man”
_ touch “Play/Rec” > “Audio”
_ tap the Audio Name box to see the pop-in menu
_ touch “LOAD” - this will allow you to load the audio clip’s location to the MONTAGE from the USB stick. In other words, you’ll need to have the USB stick connected in order for the Audio to stream, but you have ‘taught’ this program where to look for the “Rocket Man” .WAV file.

Linking the Performance and the Audio Wav using the “Live Set”
While on this Audio screen press [SHIFT] + [LIVE SET] to register the WAV file’s location to a User Live Set location.
The first available USER “Live Set” location will have a flashing white box… tap whichever Live Set slot you wish to place ”Rocket Man” (both Performance + Audio WAV)…
The Audio file is now associated with this Live Set location.

And because “Rocket Man” was the Performance that this all is referencing…
When you recall this Live Set slot, it will both recall your Performance “Rocket Man” and it will cue the “Rocket Man” Wave on the USB stick to the Audio player.

If you want to manually play the Performance — it’s sounds will be on the Keyboard immediately when you recall this Live Set slot;
when you’re ready to play the WAV, simply press the [>] PLAY button to move to the Audio screen…and the Rocket Man WAV

(You can even play along!)

Rinse and repeat for “Bohemian Rhapsody”…
Because you recall the Performance, then LOAD the .wav file’s location and associate it with a Live Set location… it will recall everything you need.

Hope that helps.

@Bad Mister

This is interesting because the instructions you provide above is EXACTLY the way I have been doing this .....but using your example, once I have set up Bohemian Rhapsody and put it into live set ,when I then go and call back up to Rocket Man,the audio on Rocket Man has now switched from Rocket Man to Bohemian Rhapsody (i.e the last audio I called up)!

In fact, it's even more crazy because in some cases- sometimes when I call up another performance that I have previosly set up with a pattern and auidio using your instructions (let's call it no.3 - Queens The Show Must Go On), the correct audio IS there BUT the pattern is now not correct and the 'link' has broken from linked blue to unlinkled white !!

I haven't yet tried Jason's suggested way of doing things

Any more thoughts guys please?

If you do what you wrote, I don’t doubt it… But you still are not getting it… this could be because you’re writing fast or not proofing what you wrote… or you’re missing a nuance in the directions… or I totally missed what you are trying to do (also a possibility)!

You need to call up the MONTAGE Performance “Bohemian Rhapsody”, from its HOME screen:
Touch “Play/Rec” to move to the Sequencer/Performance Recorder area.
Next you must select “Audio”
Tap the Audio name box, and load the .wav location.
Then you link the “Bohemian Rhapsody” Audio (.wav) to the Live Set… [SHIFT] + [LIVE SET]
Place the Bohemian Rhapsody Audio in USER Live Set 1, Page 1, Slot 1

Call up the MONTAGE Performance “Rocket Man” and from its HOME screen
Touch “Play/Rec” to move to the Sequencer/Performance Recorder area.
Next you must select “Audio”
Tap the Audio name box and load the .wav location for “Rocket Man”
Then you link the “Rocket Man” Audio (.wav) to the Live Set… [SHIFT] + [LIVE SET]
Place Rocket Man Audio in USER Live Set 1, Page 1, Slot 2

Now when you want to recall your setups:
Press [LIVE SET]
You can access them from the Live Set grid

Alternatively, you can use FS Assign = LIVE SET +
This will allow you advance through your currently active “Live Set”, no matter what screen you happen to be looking at.

Please try again.

This may help.

It is the Sequence (that is, the MIDI Song or the Pattern) that recalls the Performance. Not the other way ‘round. As I understood you, you want to recall a Performance (a set of sounds) you are going to play a portion from a known tune, then you are going to play a .wav of the original recording.

Therefore your question was how to link the Audio WAV with the Performance. The answer is from the Performance —> “Play/Rec” > “Audio” > teach the instrument by registering the .wav file’s location to a Live Set. The location is on an external device (USB stick) which must be present for this work. If you do not have that USB stick, your Slot may read “Not Found”.

You play the keyboard and the sounds you selected are accessible, you press Play the WAV plays. Did I misunderstand?

If you also want the Performance to recall a Song or Pattern, remember: it don’t work like that. It’s a subtlety but the Song or Pattern recalls the Performance. (It’s been like that forever with MIDI sequences, the MIDI Sequence can recall the sounds you used… either by BankSelect and ProgramChange, or by another method).

From the Live Set, if you select “Bohemian Rhapsody Audio” the WAV will be cued to play, you only need press the PLAY button. The sounds of the “Bohemian Rhapsody” Performance are accessible via the keyboard.

If you’re saying, now, on yet another Performance, you wish to additionally select a Pattern… (as in you now require an audio WAV, a MONTAGE Performance and a Pattern), you must touch “Pattern” and increment or decrement to the Pattern Number you want, it will if you’ve stored things properly, recall the “linked” Performance.

In other words, when you work on a Pattern, remember you get to Pattern from within the current Performance… when you start to record data, you will be offered to “Store” creating a link (blue chain links appear) between the sequence data and the Performance in use - this means whenever you recall this Pattern, it will automatically go and get the Performance. This link is made separate from the registration to the Live Set

Alternatives
As is always true, there is more than one way to do this. You should be able to link your USB stick Audio WAV with an internal Performance via the Live Set following the above instructions.

You can for “The Show Must Go On” create your “Live Set” registration from the PATTERN sequencer screen (linked to the appropriate Performance) - it will appear as: “The Show Must Go On”—Pattern… you can perform with it… and when you’re ready to play the Queen audio WAV…

Create an entirely separate “Live Set” slot to recall “The Show Must Go On”—Audio.

Not to worry about ‘wasting’ Live Set slots, you’ve got tons of them. 256 per Bank, 8 Banks.

No...I still cannot make this work correctly...

I even went right back to 'category search' (rather than my live set) to find the Bohemian Rhapsody performance before going to its home screen
Thereafter I followed your instructions to the letter but am still finding that after having set up Rocket Man (again as per your instructions), when going back to Bohemian Rhapsody I find Rocket Man either selected in as the chosen Pattern (chain unlinked) or Rocket Man is the linked audio WAV.

Have to say I didn't understand 'FS Assign = LIVE SET + .....but presume that is not key to solving this issue.

This seems to be the successful workaround for me that you suggested:

"Create an entirely separate “Live Set” slot to recall “The Show Must Go On”—Audio. Not to worry about ‘wasting’ Live Set slots, you’ve got tons of them. 256 per Bank, 8 Banks".

Thanks
