The VCM Mini filter sounds excellent, speaking as someone who's used and repaired Model D's in the past.

1. Too bad you there's no keyboard tracking for the cutoff. Speaking of which, wouldn't it be great if midi note numbers could be a whole new modulation source? As a workaround I'll create a Cubase midi processing insert that converts midi notes to CC which can then control the cutoff.

2. It can self-oscillate like a screaming banshee. Nice. The "Texture" options affect the self-oscillation range and the sensitivity and amount of resonance. There's some nice mathematical filter modelling at work.

2. There's no audible filter stepping when using these modulation sources: LFO, Motion Sequences and Pitchbend wheel (when set to a low Curve Ratio). Since the LFO and Motion Sequences can be set to Loop:Off you can use it as an EG.

Superknob, Modwheel, Ribbon, Assign knobs and external midi control (except via pitchbend) all have audible stepping at higher resonance because they only have 127 steps (7-bit midi data). Once again, sucks that Yamaha doesn't implement data interpolation like Nords, Access Virus, etc.

3. A slew parameter could control the speed of the step interpolation so you could choose how much lag happens when modulating the cutoff quickly.

In any case, this is a sticky issue for me as I came pretty close to not buying the Montage in 2016 due to its lack of parameter interpolation when using an offset or 127-step source, especially with the cutoff.
