Does anyone have a link or some good instructions on how to use the assignable buttons or knobs. The articles I have found like the one below due not appear to be adequate or clear for me. I tried following it but get stuck on step 6.

MOXF: Use Assignable Function buttons to Turn Elements On and Off

MOXF: Use Assignable Function buttons to Turn Elements On and Off

1) Press the [VOICE] button.

2) Press the [EDIT] button.

3) Press a part select [1]–[8] button to select the desired element to edit.

4) Press the [F1] button.

5) Press the [SF1] button.

6) Set the XACtrl parameter to the desired AF setting.

NOTE: “AF1 On” will only turn the element on if the Assignable Function 1 button is turned on, and “AF2 On” will only turn the element on if the Assignable Function 2 button is turned on. If set to “all AF Off” the element will only turn on if both assignable function buttons are off.

7) Press another Part Select [1]–[8] button to select a different element to edit.

8) Repeat step 6.

9) Press the [COMMON] button.

10) Press the [F1] button.

11) Press the [SF4] button.

12) Set the A.Func1 and A.Func2 settings to the desired “momentary” or “latch” setting.

NOTE: when set to “momentary” pressing and holding the button turns the lamp on and releasing the button turns the lamp off. Latch alternates the lamp between on and off every time the assignable function button is pressed.

13) To save changes to the voice press the [STORE] button.

14) Select a user voice location to store to.

15) Press the [ENTER] button twice.

The Assignable Function buttons, [AF1] and [AF2], can be set to act as ‘momentary’ or ‘latch’ type buttons on a per Voice basis. Momentary would be used for recalling a quick change, one that occurs and then immediately returns to normal. For example, on many of the Acoustic Guitar Voices, it might recall a harmonic or a pitch slide, something that you would momentarily insert in your playing. These articulations are referred to as XA CONTROL (Expanded Articulation Control) — you are switching from the normal AWM2 Element to an Element that is a completely different sample set.

Although the AF1/AF2 Buttons can be used in the Voice Control Sets, Yamaha introduced the XA CONTROL feature back in 2007 in the Motif XS, as a way to expand the flexibility of sample playback. You are triggering a snippet of audio to play, XA CONTROL allows the triggered sample to transition seamlessly to other audio samples, thus facilitating various musical articulations and gestures to be realized.

Sometimes the buttons are set to ‘latch’, say you have bowed orchestra string ensemble, and you need to switch to pizzicato for an eight measure phrase, ‘latch’ can switch the sounding Elements to the pizzicato articulation without you having to hold the button down. XA CONTROL is assigned on a per Element basis on the main Osc/Wave screen (see article below).

The other use for the AF1/AF2 buttons would be to use them as a “Source” in the Voice’s Control Set.
The Assign Switches 1/2 are assigned within the Voice’s Control Set.
