Hi, how does it respond to dynamic respect cfx? "Only 8 layer" for American grand...11 layer for cfx....
Thanks

While the number of "layers" may seem like it's very important- in reality, it is just a means to an end. What makes a Yamaha different from a Bosendorfer and a Bosendorfer different from a Steinway, is the character of sound. Let's face it, you're not going to really hear (so much as feel) the number of layers the sound transitions through... it's the overall character of the piano that separates one from the other.

And the kind of response you get is going to vary according to the touch of the player. It's totally a personal thing.

I agree. The number of layers isn't really a factor in this case: 8 vs 11.

I'm enjoying how it plays and how it sounds - for my music production.

I'm not completely agree with you. I've 5 layer bosendorfer in my ne5 and I prefere 11 layer of montage bosendorfer. In my nord electro 5 I've also 5 layer steinway so not much less than 8 layer of american grand....that's why i asked about feeling. The number of layef is important....let's see what happen in vst piano that reach more than 20 layers in last version.

THE SYNTHOGY AMERICAN GRAND
In my opinion this is the best piano sound set ever .!! sure for the Montage when play the Montage 8 keys . these 39 american grand piano presets are really hgave a realistic high quality sound!! there are many external piano sound sets that i purchased for the Yamaha Motif series that also can load in the montage all these
other piano sets sound . lets say are ok . But also many similar same sounding piano sounds presets !! .. The American Grand 36 amazing piano presets also for all music styles from smooth woody . till hammer rock presets , A highly recommended especially for the low price ..!!!

I've bought this library and I also have the Bosendorfer one. They're both impeccably sampled, layered and programmed with no transition artefacts or discontinuities which I've often heard on 3rd party piano libraries. (The demos typically don't show these things up at all, but you feel them straight away when you start playing.)

But to me, the nicest of the three is actually the Montage preset CFX. It just really clicks under my fingers and I love the sound of it. Perhaps that's not completely surprising as I like the sound and feel of real Yamaha grands too. It's fascinating how everybody's tastes are different and so personal, as BM says.

Another piano I very much enjoyed on the Motif was the K-Sounds Piano 1, a relatively small 63MB sample set of a Steinway Model D, but it sounded great, especially with a bit of tweaking, and felt really nice to play.

I listen your suggestion and I bought it. I'm not completely satisfied. Sample is good but I think that it isn't completely right programmed for montage. Resonance effect isn't used for example. In some preset there is too reverb to me. Playability is good, maybe little bit less than cfx and bosendorfer in terms of dynamics but 8 layer are enough to feel keys.....yes it remains to me doubt about have bought American grand and not "vintage d" vst piano...ok I can play steinway only with montage without pc and that's good.
I think that 89€ is little bit too much about it but in the end I'm happy about it.

@Andrea,

For resonance - are you referring to the damper resonance? Just checking - because at least that could be added as an insertion effect assuming it does not displace another effect you want to keep in the chain. If resonance as sympathetic string resonance - this is another beast entirely.

For the touch - I'm wondering if you've tried adjusting the velocity curves? Perhaps more than the amount of velocity layers - it's the usage of the existing layers matching your particular range of velocity ("sweet spot"). Perhaps experimenting with the velocity curve or even manually adjusting each layer's velocity range (as a more advanced and time consuming step) then saving as your custom performance would help alleviate any negative perception of the "feel" of the American grand.

I do agree, in general, that the less velocity layers available - the more the sound will "jump" from character when you cross the velocity threshold. And the more "analog"/smooth this transition could be by either adding velocity layers or by using computation to morph between layers (which is not available in Montage) ... the better. Maybe "8 is enough", however, if you tune the velocity to your playing.

Thanks Jason, good suggestion. I try American grand only today so my feeling with it is young....I will see next days and if I found out sometime in try to adjust parameters as you suggest.
Anyway it is a good piano.
Ciao
