Hi all,

I have a performance created that I would like to use the super knob. I don't even know how to scratch the surface with this thing. The knob is super, on the presets, I just know nothing about programming it myself.

I simply want to bring 1 Part's volume from 0 to 127 using the super knob/fc7, while all the other parts in the performance stay full volume(unaffected by the super knob). This seems like it should be super knob 101 stuff, I just can't make heads or tails out of anything posted about the super knob. Could someone explain to me how to do this?

Thank you!

It took me a while to find the blog entries this time since I couldn't find them in the list when hitting the "blog" button at the top. However, either a google search or going to "home" still indexes the series.

The Montage has a wealth of articles on how to get started with many of the new features. Take a look at the following which should keep you busy:

Super Knob Focused Material:

Entire Series:

... now someone may post a step-by-step of how to do a simple superknob setup. I haven't done any superknob setup as it does not currently translate to my personal gig setting yet. I would still recommend going through at least a few of the articles.

I've read the articles already. As stated, I cannot make heads or tails out of these articles.

Yes, they will keep me busy, but they won't answer my question.

I love the Montage. I would pay money to get training on how to use it. The problem is, my money is no good, because no one knows how to use this thing.

I can't stress to you how amazing the Montage is, and I believe I will have it for years to come. I just need to learn how to make it through the gigs I have right now, like tomorrow night.

Those blogs are great, and I appreciate them. They just don't help me with my specific question, with my level of understanding.

If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it greatly. I just want to know how to get a Part's volume off of the slider/fader control and onto the super knob/fc7 control in my own created performance.

Thank you for your reply and willingness to help me Jason.

Sorry - wasn't clear you had tried to use those resources. I'm busy with my day job - but am taking a break so maybe I can help.

I can understand how it can be frustrating to use a device with so much flexibility and also, even if you're accustomed to the Motif line, how this new stuff doesn't match what we already know.

I'll take a different approach this time and will cut/paste from the tutorial instead of rewriting anything. The tutorial supplies pictures - so cut/paste text from the text below to find the picture in the tutorial.

1) We'll start with an "Init Normal AWM2" Performance.
Press [CATEGORY SEARCH] and select "Init"
Choose "Init Normal (AWM2)"

2) From the main screen of a Performance (HOME), touch the Home icon in the upper left corner of the screen - this will automatically take you to the main screen of the current Performance, and it will highlight the Performance Name.

3) Touch "MOTION CONTROL" - the second item in the first column of the screen
Touch "SUPER KNOB" - the fifth item in the second column of the screen

[Jason comment: by default - super knob on an initialized performance is already active and controlling all assignable knobs - so we just have to link an assignable knob to change the parameter we want to modify - but from this screen you can change the min/max values for the parameter and direction - we'll just leave it 0 to 127 in the positive direction]

4) From the HOME screen (touch the Home icon in the upper left corner)
• Highlight the PERFORMANCE NAME: "Super Knob Morph A"
[Jason comment: performance name will be the AWM2 Init name not super knob morph]
• Press [EDIT]
• Press the PART [COMMON] button (right side upper COMMON button)
• In the screen select "Control" (left column of the screen) > "Control Assign"
• Make sure the AUTO SELECT option is active (green)
• Move Common Assignable Knob #1 to recall its setting
[Jason comment: when you press auto select that tells Montage to select the control you move instead of having to search for the control in the list - so the last two bullets just make the assignable knob the selected source - also, assignable knob #1 is the knob with the LEDs above the left-most fader]

5) Touch the parameter contained within the "DESTINATION 1" box, to reveal the list of potential assignment destinations that can be selected. There are a ton of potential options. More than you might first think. Use the DATA DIAL to explore the options. In this particular example, by selecting PART 1 > PART 1 Assign 1 we are linking PART 1's first knob with the Super Knob.

6) [JWW Comment - I'm going to go off script here on down and give the answers in my own terms. More because it will be faster than looking up where to find in the tutorial]
Next, edit part 1 and make a link between the part 1 assign control and volume

a) Press home
b) Click on the part name "Init Normal (AWM2)" on the touchscreen to the right of "name"
c) Select "Edit" on the touchscreen

7) Pick "Mod/Control" then "Control Assign" (boxes on left side of screen) to get to the right menu for assigning part 1's assignable param 1

8) Make sure "auto select" is selected (box should be green) and spin the assignable knob 1 (above left-most fader) to select

9) Press the [+] to set the destination to "Part Param > Volume" (just shows up as "Volume" after selected)

10) Change the curve polarity to "Bi" (should be green) so the volume can be controlled up and down, ratio as +63, param1 is 5. [FYI - but not necessary for your request: Different ratio numbers can scale the effect (volume control) to less - which means you no longer can go all the way to zero or all the way up. You may want to experiment if you want different ranges of controls - although there are several places to change this. ]

11) Turn the super knob and play. Should hear your part 1 cut in and out - or anything between. Super knob is now part 1's volume.

I did go through the blog 5, which looks to address my issue. When I go to Assign the Volume for the part, it doesn't apply itself to the super knob. I'm missing something here that is probably pretty simple.

When I take a unipolar ramp of volume at the defaults without changing anything - the volume is affected but not by much. See step 10 which is how I got volume to go to the extents.

It would be easier if there was a "parity" setting - no curves - where whatever we put into the extents of the assignable knob (0-127) would be fed directly into the parameter with no scaling or curves - just stick it in directly. I guess to put it in consistent language - to make a "Thru" setting as a curve option.

... not sure if later firmware fixes this (I have 1.02) - but it seems like Part Volume is velocity and not volume. At least the performance I generated seems to be fixed at one volume and does not respond to differences in velocity (striking the keys).

Maybe using Element Level (and setting each of the elements) will work better.

The strange thing is when I undo the super knob setting from volume to some other parameter, the velocities still seem fixed at one level.

One clue that volume is not changed is that the default part volume for the initialized part 1 does not change from 100 when turning the superknob.

Now it seems all my sounds are at the same level even past a reboot. For now, maybe don't follow the instructions unless Yamaha chimes in and explains what is going on.

it really is easy, but you will have to struggle thru those lessons one by one until you understand them. otherwise how will you ever know how to use the superknob? I agree those lessons can be a bit complicated and hard to understand at first but you just have to read them over and over again until you get it 🙂
So to just bring up the volume of part 1:

Highlight your PERFORMANCE NAME
In the screen select "Control" (left column of the screen) > "Control Assign"
Make sure the AUTO SELECT option is active (green)
Move the first knob on the keyboard to activate it
set the Destination 1 = PART 1 Assign 1
Press the [PART SELECT 1/1] button on the right front panel
The top of the screen will read "Edit - Part1 - Common"
Select "MOD/CONTROL" (left column of the screen) > "Control Assign"
Move the first knob on the keyboard again
set the destination 1 to PART VOLUME
check to see if Source is indeed set to AsgnKnob 1
choose a waveform with
Polarity = Bi
Ratio = +63
Param 1 = 5

should work

The following video is just a screen recording taken for testing purposes. It does not have the final quality. But it covers your topic so it might be helpful, hopefully ... 😉

Have fun ...

Jason, from reading your post, I think I gather that what you posted won't work.

Gabi, what you explained to me is exactly what is explained in blog 5 on the super knob. It did not work.

Thanks so much for helping me out with this.

I still need a working solution.

Hans, I just saw your post, that video looks awesome, I'll try that when I get home to see if that is what I have been doing, or if it unlocks the piece of the puzzle for me. I really appreciate the video.

I probably should have noted this, I have added the Wax & Wayne(pad, I think) part to a performance. I realize there are 5 parts to that preset, I'm just using the first two, deleted the others. These two parts are the ones that I cannot get programmed to operate off of the super knob/fc7.

What I posted does perform volume control on a part-by-part basis. What I was concerned about was velocity - but I always started with an initialized voice and for me - the initialized voice has no velocity variation with or without superknob.

that's probaly why, you're using a preset that alreay has superknob programming. who knows what's going on there already. Bad Mister said that can get very compicated, don't use presets to learn the superknob, You'll have to struggle thru all the lessons to understand all the settings that are already in that performance. I'm at lesson 5 now. Not easy, had to go over and over things. But there's no other way to learn it, I suppose.
