Sending Audio into USB inputs from Ableton

Hello,

Is it possible to use the USB audio inputs as the A/D source to use as an envelope follower? It doesn't seem like you can but thought i would just confirm.

Also when I hook up an ipad to the MODx I can control the volume using the USB Volume knob, however when I send signal to the USB inputs from Ableton I cannot control the volume with the Knob. It is almost like the MODx doesn't even see that signal coming into the L/R USB inputs although it does play the sound from Ableton through the MODx to the monitors. Any idea why that is?

Thanks

MODX has two digital inputs. "Main L/R" and "Digital L/R". The difference between your Ableton setup and other environments is likely configuration of which MODX input (DAW output) is targeted.

The digital channel "Main L/R" routes straight to the Monitors without your ability to intercept. "Digital L/R" is treated more like a generic A/D input allowing for routing options.

Hi Jason,

Yeah this is where I am confused then, because in Ableton I am able to see the Main L/R and The Digital L/R as the options to send to on the MODx interface. I choose the Digital L/R and I can hear it come through the MODx and out. However I can't do anything with the sound. The only thing I can do is in the edit part parameters "audio in" I can turn it down or pan it. I can't add any effects on it or use it as an envelope modifier (which is what I am trying to accomplish).

If I choose the Main L/R in Ableton then nothing comes into the MODx or goes out of it all.

I was hoping to use the USB Digital L/R the same way as the AD 1/4in inputs. It seems I should be able to do this by your last response also. Is there a port issue or something maybe?

Also, what is the intended purpose of the Main L/R input? I can't get it to do anything when i send signal to it.

Thanks,

The “Digital In” is one of two Audio Inputs to the MODX.

The “A/D In” is, of course, analog.
You can set their parameters within each Performance on the upper “Common/Audio” level.
From HOME:
Press [EDIT]
Touch “Audio In”
Here you can set the parameters for both.

Each has access to a mix volume, Direct Level, RevSend, VarSend, and Output routing.
If you route to an individual USB numbered bus, the signal is routed there pre the Rev and Var Sends (they will disappear).

The “A/D In” can utilize a Dual Insertion Effect dedicated to its input. And can be a direct source to the Envelope Follower.
The “Digital In” is routed post the System Effects, to the Master FX, Master EQ and the Main L/R

If your desire is to route incoming “Digital In” signal to the Envelope Follower, for example; It is available in the “EnvelopeMst” composite signal.
“EnvelopeMst” can be a source and routed to modify any of the internal synth Parts.

Thanks Bad Mister, I didn't think about routing the master for the envelope. Unfortunately it doesn't work as well as the AD in because it is getting all the sounds and I want the envelope to follow just certain sounds. I found a workaround by setting the outputs for my second monitors on the focusrite 18i8 directly into the A/D and setting the focusrite to send signal to both main monitors and second monitors simultaneously. It works well but I lose the ability to switch monitors for mix testing.

I have setup a return channel in ableton so I can then use the individual send knobs from tracks to send whatever sounds I want to go the AD and take the dry signal of AD in the MODx to 0 so it is only modulating the envelope without sending sound to master. So it all works but would have liked to do it via USB so I could keep the second monitors hooked up still.

You mentioned sending the digital to an individual USB numbered bus. Does that mean directly to a part? I am not sure I understand because from the computer the only options i have to send are Main L/R and Digital L/R. How do I send to a numbered slot?

I understand USB outs from the MODx are sent Mains 1-2, part1 3-4, part2 5-6 etc. but don't understand designation this for sending from computer to the MODx .

You are sending signal from the computer back to the MODX on the the Digital In, you then must route that signal somewhere… from the internal mixer of the MODX either to the “Main L/R” (Analog Outs) to back to the computer on a USB bus… you might have process it with Reverb, Variation before returning the signal on a discreet audio bus to re-record it in your DAW.

Here you can set the parameters for both. A/D In on top, Digital In on the bottom.

Each has access to Input Mode, a mix Volume, Pan, Direct Level, RevSend, VarSend, and Output Select routing.

If you look at this screen you can see the Output Select routing parameter for the “Digital In” (lower right corner) It defaults to “Main L/R” but you can reroute the Digital In to any Output option.

If you look at the Audio Signal Flow diagram it will show you “Digital In” going to the destination you set. Below you can see the “Digital In” going to the “Main L/R”. But you could route it to any of the “USB 1-8” Outs. You do so on the Audio In screen. If you change the “Output Select” above to “USB 1/2” see how it changes the Audio Signal Flow diagram below…

If you change it to “USB 1/2” you can see how the Sys and Master FX are bypassed!
