Hi,
First things first I am a real newbie so bear with me but I'm a bit puzzled. I like building my own performances using multiple parts, e.g. bass guitar in the left hand with a clav in the right with another layer. However, when i try and save this to a live set by pressing SHIFT then the LIVE SET button, it will only save one of the parts, not the whole lot.
Would anyone be able to help me store all the settings, e.g. effects, parameters, layering etc. to a live set (or any other way of saving them) please!! I've scanned both manuals but can't find a way that works. Again sorry for the newbieness but would be very glad of your help!

What you are describing does not match my experience - so perhaps something else is interacting here which you do not realize.

[STORE]'d (saved) Performances are saved to the live set. Your edit buffer is not saved to the live set. If you are modifying any Performance to create your own new user performance (say you start with Init AWM2 and change the default PART1 to a synth and add more PARTs to PARTs 2-4) -- you need to first [STORE] your edits to a new user Performance and (optional, but encouraged to use something other than default) name your new performance something you are able to easily find. Then after [STORE]'ing this Performance, you can save the Performance to live set and you should see all the PARTs 1-4 you programmed.

You can also save presets which have multilpe PARTs (1 through 16) to Live Set. These will all retain all the PARTs they have programmed in the preset Performance. Preset Performances are all the Performances built-in to your firmware like CFX+FM EP and all the rest listed in the data list documentation.

I only discussed PARTs - but effects, layering, parameters, LFOs, EVERYTHING will be retained when you add a Performance to the Live Set. The Live Set does not hold any of that data - it just "points" to your real Preset or User or Library performance that is saved outside of the Live Set. Live Set is like a bookmark in the page of memory where the Performance is actually saved (user, preset, library) so you can quickly recall that page.

The only parameter which is saved to Live Set which alters your Performance is a volume override value. You can program the Live Set to override the volume of the Performance. By default the volume will be the same as your volume programmed in the Performance. However, in the Live Set you can edit a volume value which overrides the value programmed in the user/preset/library Performance. This override only happens when you select the Performance from the Live Set. If you select the same Performance through Category Search or any other means other than Live Set (like a MIDI LSB/MSB+program change message) then the override value will not take effect and the volume will be as programmed in the Performance itself.

I'm not sure my theory about attempting to store your edit buffer into the Live Set is on target or not.

FYI: the edit buffer is the purgatory memory space where you are editing any other performance. Before you save your edits - you are working in the "edit buffer". If you turn off the keyboard without [STORE]'ing your edit buffer (saving your edits) then the work will be lost since the edit buffer is not saved. This is called volatile memory.

Hi thanks for your help. I guess the correct way to say it is I want to create my own multi-part performances. Say, for example I want a string section but I would like to add some timpanis in the lower section. However I also only want these to play when I play over a certain velocity, so I set velocity limits. I know how to do all this but I can't seem find a way to save the changes.

This sounds like what I want! I just need to know how to create a user performance and save it.

If you have used Yamaha synths or workstations in the past (MO series, Motif series) - then having to [STORE] your work is no different of a requirement than before. If you are new to Yamaha synths/workstations - then learning this will transfer to many many other keyboards should you get an opportunity to work with "legacy" products - and likely going forward the file-system will keep the [STORE] workflow.

The need to [STORE] often trips users up when it comes to scenes. Since scenes have a "save" feature - sometimes users believe this saving saves the entire performance and are surprised when scenes do not act the same as expected/programmed. Usually this is from a lack of [STORE]'ing changes. I would [STORE] frequently as I edit in case something happens like a power failure, meteor, solar flare, rats eating the power cable, etc. Most of the time I keep changing the name so I can "go back" to a previous save if I need to back out anything. Then I can go back and clean up the extra saved files if I feel I do not need each incremental version.

Before we had to be concerned about conserving memory. That need still exists - but the cup is much larger for filling - so less of a concern.

Say you start with a Factory Performance String Sound, and you “+” ADD, your timpani Part... and create the Velocity Limit and Note Limit for this Part
Press [STORE]
You will be offered to “Save as New Performance” in the current USER Bank.
It takes you to the PERFORMANCE NAME screen... very important: change the Name.
If you don’t give your Performance a new name you’ll have difficulty finding it later.
Give it a name that you’ll remember

The new Performance will be added to your current User Bank... the User Bank has 640 locations. You can see how many you have created thus far by:
Press [UTILITY]
Touch “Contents” > “Data Utility” > Touch the “Performance Folder” the number out of 640 is shown in the upper right corner. And each Performance is shown as an item. (This is where you can rename or delete them).

If this is your first User Performance you’ll see “1/640” indicated, and just one item will appear in the Performance Folder.
These items in your User Bank will remain there until you Delete them or you load another file to your User Bank.
If you attempt to load a file that will overwrite your current User data, you will receive a warning telling you the File that you have selected to Load will replace the data currently in your User Bank.

If you already have made a User File .X7U of the Data in the User Bank, you can proceed and overwrite the Data. No worries. But if you not, STOP, and quickly save as USER FILE. You can never have too many files.

The only time you need worry about overwriting the User Bank, is when you have not yet made a File to save your data - the smart MONTAGE user creates User files every time they come up with a new Performance. You can keep a file with the Month as the name and call it “FebruaryWIP” (Works in Progress)... then at the end of the month assess where you are with filling this bank...

Think of the USER BANK as the following
A set of 640 Performances
A “Live Set” containing 2048 slots that reference your User Performances.
A set of 256 User Arpeggios
A set of 256 Motion Sequences
Your custom User Microtunings
The User Waveforms that make the User programs work (up to 2048)

You may not fill all of these but each User Bank can be “frozen” as a set and placed in the READ ONLY MEMORY portion of the MONTAGE memory called a “LIBRARY”. So you can take the USER BANK and create eight different versions of it - that always remain available as your eight Libraries. A Library represents a ROM version of the MONTAGE User Bank.

You literally SAVE the User Bank, using the familiar computer routine of “saving as...” you save as “Library File”. When you Save the User Bank to a USB stick by “saving as...” Library File .X7L, you create a file that can be then installed in the ROM for long term access. You then must install that data by loading LIBRARY FILE.

Thanks Jason and Bad Mister! I actually found out how to do this shortly after posting my reply but one more question..... When i add another part to a performance, I can seem to adjust its volume, by the slider or the 'MIX' section. The 'original' part (IYKWIM?) is the only one that I can adjust the volume of. Any advice?

When i add another part to a performance, I can seem to adjust its volume, by the slider or the 'MIX' section.

When you are using a sound programmed by someone else, you owe it to yourself to EXPLORE what controller assignments that they have made, so you understand why YOU cannot change the VOLUME with the Faders...

Perhaps, they assigned control of VOLUME to another CONTROLLER.
Here's how to explore
From the HOME screen
Press [SHIFT] + [HOME] to get "Info"
This takes you to the OVERVIEW screen, where you can see what physical controllers are working.

The cursor is sitting on the PART parameter which shows "COMMON"
You can increment that to PART 1 and view what controllers are assigned to PART 1 and then PART 2, 3, 4 etc... through PART 16... (you may only have a few PARTS active- it will show you which PARTS are active in the OVERVIEW screen.

If you touch the "Edit Part 1 Control Settings" shortcut box - you will be taken directly to PART 1's CONTROL ASSIGN screen

Here use the DATA DIAL to set the "DISPLAY FILTER = ALL"... there can be as many as four PAGES of Source/Destination assignments (PAGE is in the upper right corner).

You are looking for the DESTINATION that says "VOLUME"
This will tell you that VOLUME is assigned to a different physical control (shown in the box labeled "SOURCE") If for example, VOLUME has been assigned to a PART Assign Knob, then the position of that Assign Knob will determine the VOLUME (it overrides the Fader) it means that the programmer want to bring it in either by moving the Assign Knob or by linking that Assign Knob with SUPER KNOB movement - so that they can control it hands-free!

If you want to have control on the FADER instead, you can DELETE this CONTROL SET, but touching the "DELETE" box in the lower right corner of the screen.
