S90 Possible culprit in making Logic Pro create take folders?

Hi,

New to this forum... I've got a problem which is making me tear my hair out!

When I record something into Logic Pro using the S90 I very often (inconsistently) get MIDI take folders created in Logic. I hate MIDI take folders! They're fiddly and just interrupt my workflow. I can't work out how it's happening, I've been moaning on the Logic Pro forum thinking it was a Logic bug but more and more I think it's something the S90 is sending out. I've disabled create take folders in Logic's MIDI recording preferences. I've searched the net for anything similar and can't find it. The take folders are characterised by having an accurate representation of some of what I've played on one take, gibberish (a collection of all MIDI notes played on one beat) on another and/or a held note for the duration of the take on another take within the folder. Make sense?

It feels like the S90 is spitting out MIDI, or buffering and then spitting out... or something? Wondered whether it might be anything to do with zones and playing across the zones but I can't really replicate the problem, it just seems to happen inconsistently but often.

My method of working always has me using capture record rather than record within Logic, it's just a habit but one I'd find difficult to break. Don't know if that might make a difference but I doubt it.

It's the latest version of Logic, got a new iMac 5K but it was doing it with my old MacPro too. Connection to the computer is via USB. It's just an older S90 Master Kbd, doesn't have an XS or anything else in the name.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Chris

Yes, I have an idea, an educated guess really, because I haven't used Logic since the early '90's... But it may be a feature that you have activated that should not be activated.

The Yamaha synths are able to act a Remote Control Surfaces for several different DAWs, Logic being one of them. Actually, the S90 (2002) had a template for Logic Audio Platinum v5 - how it's "feature" effects Logic Pro is anybody's guess.

But what you should look at to fix this issue is your S90 MIDI PORT assignments. The S90 communicates on multiple ports via USB - you only want one of them (Port 1) to wind up getting access to your MIDI Tracks. For example, if your Port that is supposed to be reserved for Remote Control messages winds up merging with your port 1 data, touching certain buttons or playing certain keys can open windows, change functions, etc.

Remote Control commands use standard Midi messages - just instead of playing music they turn things on/off... Open windows, arm tracks, etc. Your switches, and continuous controls that get retasked for remote control functions. Misrouted they can cause chaos of the worst kind...

Sorry I don't have the S90 port map still in my recent memory banks (brain), but check to make sure that only Port 1 from the S90 is able to reach your Logic Pro Midi tracks.

That sounds like the most promising solution I've had!

Bizarrely, it's not been happening since I wrote on the forum... it's as if it knows and has grown sentience. But this theory would tie into my experience and would explain, to a certain extent, the seemingly random aspect to it. I've been looking through the MIDI utility panels to find a MIDI output selector but can't seem to find it, I know I'm just looking in the wrong place and it'll be somewhere or other. But I can set the filter up at Logic's inputs too so it's definitely worth a try.

I'll report back if it solves it...

Thank you so much for taking the time to help, much appreciated.
