I'm not aware of the feature on Akai - so this may be off the mark. But as far as roll features on MODX, this applies to MODX as well:

The roll function is right on every mpc. It says roll.

Disclaimer: I'm not going to take the time to check how Akai implements roll - so apologies, in advance, if what I've pointed to doesn't do the same thing. But this is what MODX does and you can check for yourself if it works for you.
