Reface CP Midi In Problem

I just got a Reface CP and there's an issue with notes cutting off when played over midi from a m-audio 61es keyboard.

When plugged via USB into Ableton all keys send and record correct note length.

Played via MIDI thru Focusrite interface and out via MIDI everything also works fine.

About 20% of the time, when directly connected via MIDI to the Keystation 61es, notes will stop sustaining after apox half a second, and always the same note length before ending, regardless of whether the the sustain pedal is engaged or not.

The Reface has the latest firmware, and the problem persists whether in OMNI mode or set to a specific midi channel.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Any solutions?

Sounds like the refaceCP is fine.

From what you’ve written seems the issue is the external keyboard. Or are we missing some other facts? How do you connect the keyboard to the refaceCP? You don’t say...

Omni Mode simply means you can send In on any channel
When set to a specific channel means it will respond on that specific channel. This would have nothing whatever to do with your issue.

I did.

"when directly connected via MIDI to the Keystation 61es"

so the keystation plays fine over USB and MIDI into the DAW, confirmed by the recorded note data, BUT when connected direct to the Reface there are issues with note sustain.

So, based on that process, the issue is the CP's ability to handle incoming midi data direct from a keyboard. i.e. NOTE ON/OFF

Is this an issue others have experienced?

The logic behind using a certain midi channel would be to eliminate the possibility of any random midi 'chatter' that would signal a key has been released.

No, not to my knowledge, that’s why I ask the question. If you are attempting to work this through a process of elimination. Then you’ll need to try a different Keyboard to trigger the refaceCP. And/or a different tone generator to test the viability of your controller.

Hey Matt, sorry for reviving this old thread. I'm experimenting a very similar issue regarding the late release of the sustained notes in my Yamaha Reface CP.
This happens with and without an external MIDI Controller.
Could you fix it that time?
Cheers

I got the exact same issue with the exact same equipment :
M-audio ES61 MIDI OUT straight to MIDI IN of Reface CP wth MIDI cable.
Sound stops at random times, regardless volume, number of notes, sustain etc.
Same controller has no issue with other MIDI devices.
Help would be very much appreciated since the original plan was to use ES61 as MIDI controller for CP, not purchase another MIDI controller as well.
Thanks !

How is the ES61 powered? I think there's a bus power option through USB and wanted to see how your power was supplied (wall wart, USB port - what device's USB port, etc).

I'm asking because I've seen mention of high power consumption needs shutting down the supply when using a USB port as the power source.

Both ES61 and CP are powered from a wall wart.
Thanks

Hi Vinz,
Sorry you are having issues.
_ Is your unit working normally when connected to Ableton, as well?
_ Does it playback normally when connected to a computer via USB-MIDI, for example.
_ Does the refaceCP play normally when triggered by its own keys? If yes to the above, we can eliminate the tone generator and concentrate on your external connection.
_ Eliminate the issue being audio connectivity — connect a set of Phones (this will eliminate a problem with a broken or intermittent 1/4” Output jack.
_ What is the total length of the MIDI connection from controller to refaceCP? And are any additional adapters, hubs or other devices involved?
_ Visually check the pins of the refaceCP’s included MIDI In/Out adapter cable, visually inspect the multi-pin port on the adapter and on the reface back panel — a broken or bent pin can be an issue.
_ Do you have access to a MIDI Monitor? If, yes, connect your keyboard controller to it and analyze the data.

Let us know.

=> YES
MIDI connection works fine with other controller/synths :
MIDI OUT works fine (Reface CP can control a Behringer Poly D)
MIDI IN works fine (Reface CP can be controlled by M-Audio Axiom25 and Behringer Poly D)

_ Does it playback normally when connected to a computer via USB-MIDI, for example.
=> YES

_ Does the refaceCP play normally when triggered by its own keys? If yes to the above, we can eliminate the tone generator and concentrate on your external connection.
=> YES

_ Eliminate the issue being audio connectivity — connect a set of Phones (this will eliminate a problem with a broken or intermittent 1/4” Output jack.
=> OK

_ What is the total length of the MIDI connection from controller to refaceCP? And are any additional adapters, hubs or other devices involved?
=> 1m MIDI cable / 5m MIDI cable

_ Visually check the pins of the refaceCP’s included MIDI In/Out adapter cable, visually inspect the multi-pin port on the adapter and on the reface back panel — a broken or bent pin can be an issue.
=> OK

_ Do you have access to a MIDI Monitor? If, yes, connect your keyboard controller to it and analyze the data.
=> NO

BTW the ES61 behaves totally normal when controlling other synths (Behringer Poly D, VSTs in Ableton)

Everything points to a faulty communication between M-Audio ES61 and Reface CP.

Thanks
