Record Superknob movement afterwards in Cubase

Greetings all. If I recorded the midi for a performance from Montage in Cubase using the Yamaha Montage multi-channel recording in Cubase 10.5 Pro, is it possible to record superknob movements afterwards separately?

Yes, it is.

First thing we need to discuss is what messages you are sending with the Super Knob.
[UTILITY] > “Settings” > “MIDI I/O” > in the lower right corner you can determine what messages are sent by the Super Knob and the Scene buttons.

“Super Knob CC” can be set to any Control Change number 1-95 (except 32), or it can be set to “Off” (Off means it will generate Sysex messages instead of a CC number). If your selection changes color and a “!” exclamation mark appears this signifies a conflict with another assigned controller - this should be avoided. The Super Knob CC overrides all conflicted assignments, except the “Scene CC”.

If you choose a CC number (95 and 92 are the default) its info will be editable on the Track communicating on MIDI Channel 1.
Or if you choose Sysex (CC# = Off), the data generated will be Output as Sysex and will be documented on its own dedicated Track.

The Cubase Pro, MONTAGE multi-channel record template allows you to record Sysex to a separate Track. If your “Super Knob CC” = Off, then recording to this Track will accomplish the goal.

When, however, a CC# is selected as the “Super Knob CC” you must record this data to the Track communicating with MIDI Channel 1

Adding Super Knob movement as an “Overdub”
We indicated this is possible… since the Super Knob addresses all 16 Parts of a MONTAGE Performance, when overdubbing it’s movements you will want to hear what it is changing… you will need to ensure that MIDI Channel 1 is actively set to record and is set to be echoed back to the MONTAGE Tone Generator.

When Local Control is OFF, the SuperKnob signal must be sent to an Active track and returned to the MONTAGE. A frozen Super Knob means you have not completed the circuit to and from Cubase.

There is one set of 16 Source/Destination Assignment per Performance… the messages are going to be interpreted (or not) by all Parts… when multiple Parts have been merged, there is but one set of upper Common Assignments for the Performance.

By placing you Super Knob movement on one track, you can play back that Track and you can activate any other to determine what it is doing to any particular Part.

You can use the MIDI > Functions > Extract MIDI Automation > this places the CC# for Controllers onto their own Automation Lane.

ALTERNATE METHOD: Internal Sequencer
As you may know, the MONTAGE Performance Recorder, can be used to document your performing… Each of the 16 Parts has its own dedicated Track. If you wish to overdub Controller data, the onboard sequencer makes this a breeze. It can record in real-time during the original record, or you can add new data using Overdub Record.

Say you recorded yourself moving the Super Knob, Mod Wheel, Assign Knobs etc., you can setup for “Overdub” record, and just redo your Controller movements. When you are in Overdub Record, touching a Controller will immediately begin replacing the the old data with your new data.

Even if no data was recorded for a specific Controller, you can just straight away, Overdub the movement.
It is also possible to erase just a specific controller message.

** Cubase can do a similar thing (updating the specific Controller automation use the Read/Write function)… see Cubase Operation Manual for details.

BM or Jason can correct me if I'm wrong, but just as a possibly important note, I've overdubbed a few controls like Scene changes, and I found that I had record it on MIDI Channel 1 (PART1) in order for it to work!
...not sure if this makes any difference, but I use Pro Tools for all my sequencing & audio recording.

Edit: I just saw BM's note "If you choose a CC number (95 and 92 are the default) its info will be editable on the Track communicating on MIDI Channel 1" 😉
