Record pattern into Logic

Hi,
I have an XS8 that I just love for the sound quality and for inspirations. I often use the different performances to create small pieces and store them as patterns.
I have recently started to use Logic on my old iMac running Sierra. What would be the easiest way to connect the XS8 and transfer these small music ideas from a pattern into logic?
I have so far managd to get the USB connection to work but seem to never get it straight to transfer the pattern into multiple midi tracks.
Do I need to use mLAN for that?

Sorry, I don't know Logic but when you are transferring MIDI data from one sequencer to another you have several options:

1) The easiest and most foolproof would be to SAVE the data as a Standard MIDI File (.mid format) to a USB stick... then shuttle that over to your computer and open it in your DAW. The Motif XS will create a TYPE 0, .mid file - which is universally readable by any MIDI Sequencer. This avoids all the setup, cabling, Clock synchronization, and Track dividing by MIDI Channel functions you will need to master in any other method. In your Motif XS, if you have recorded your data to the SONG Sequencer you can simply Save As "SMF: ...
Go to [FILE] > Set the FILE TYPE = SMF and Save the .MID file
If you have recorded to the PATTERN Sequencer -- Each Section must be saved as a separate Standard MIDI File

Transferring your data using the FILE method guarantees the MIDI events from the Motif XS sequencer will be faithfully and accurately transferred to your computer DAW. Any events that are written to the tracks will be ported over exactly as recorded. (STORE your Motif XS SONG MIXING or PATTERN MIXING data -- you will need to reunite the MIDI data with this Motif XS MIXING setup after you move the file to Logic). The MIXING setup is completely made from Motif XS Tone Generator parameters and is not included in the Track data.

2) If you insist on real time transfer (the hard way). You must set your DAW to be master MIDI Clock - which you must send to the Motif XS on MIDI Port 1. Set the Motif XS to slave to MIDI Clock. We'll assume that you have multiple MIDI tracks. Important to know when transferring multiple MIDI Tracks, in real time, to another sequencer: MIDI event always include the Channel number. This means you NEED TO KNOW if your DAW receiving Track records all incoming data and then OUTPUTs it back on the Channel that it arrived on... or does your DAW receiving MIDI Track only receive and transmit one MIDI Channel. (Does it re-Channelize all data to a single Channel?)

Why this is important: Say your receiving MIDI Track records and output all MIDI data on the MIDI Channel it came in on - you would need only 1 Track to record all 16 MIDI Channel.
If you were in this scenario recording 16 Tracks of XS data to 16 Tracks in Logic - each of them will record all 16 MIDI Channels - you would have some SERIOUS CHAOS !!!! (multiple Tracks triggering the same synth sounds) If this is the case you only want to record on a single Track -- in MIDI, a single MIDI Track can record all 16 MIDI Channels - because the data is kept separate by CHANNEL #. The only reason to separate MIDI data to separate TRACKS is convenience when editing or notating the data to a musical chart.

If you insist on real time transfer - and you want to record directly to separate Tracks - then in your DAW you must ensure that each MIDI Track is ONLY capable of recording and echoing back, the one MIDI Channel you designate for it to record - Each Track must FILTER all other MIDI channels but the one you designate.

In both of these real time transfers you must make the DAW the master MIDI Clock and set the Motif XS to MIDI SYNC = MIDI.

You do not need mLAN ( you are a decade too late to get this working, sorry) - That was MIDI and AUDIO interfacing and was extremely cool but unfortunately that ship has long since sailed...

I will definately test the first option to see how smooth it would be.
I also have Cubase AI that came with my Steinberg UR22c and what would the settings be in Cubase in order to go for option 2?

I do have experience with Cubase AI... If you do have Cubase then the "easy way" is still to import the data directly from your Motif XS to your software:

Motif XS SONG Import
For this you must have installed the "Motif XS Extension" to your version of Cubase AI4 (or later)
This can be obtained at http://download.yamaha.com > select your country and do a search for items concerning your Motif XS

The EXTENSIONS add functionality to Cubase that will allow you to IMPORT a Motif XS Song directly into a Cubase Project. This is the most efficient way to move Song data from your XS to Cubase. It is a simple two-step procedure. First, your musical performance data (sequence) and then your mix data into a Cubase Project - where it will all be recombined and stored together in a Cubase (.CPR) Project file. This is very useful when you have started a project in your Motif XS and want to now continue work in the Cubase environment.

Option 2: Real Time Transfer
Set Cubase to SEND MIDI Clock to the Motif XS on MIDI Port 1:
Go to TRANSPORT on the menu bar > PROJECT SYNCHRONIZATION SETUP... > Select MIDI OUT DESTINATION = Motif XS (Port 1)
Set the Motif XS to MIDI SYNC = MIDI

Open a single Cubase MIDI track
Set the MIDI INPUT = Yamaha Motif XS-1 (port 1)
Please set the CH = “ANY” (literally, click on the 1 and change it to “ANY”
Please set the Track’s MIDI OUTPUT to “Not Connected” (this is because you do not need to ECHO back the data to the Motif XS, the Motif XS is sending the data).
If you don’t do this you will hear DOUBLING. You will only need this MIDI OUT after we have transferred the data to Cubase.

It will dutifully record and playback all 16 channels.
When complete, if you need to look at them separately use DISSOLVE PARTS function... Here's how:
Go to"MIDI" on the Cubase menu bar and select DISSOLVE PARTS > select “Separate Channels”
