I've been trying to do this all evening in Cubase 8.5 Pro, and have not been able to figure out a way to do it.

I have a MIDI track routed out to the Montage. With Direct Monitor on, I can hear the audio output of the Montage in my monitors. But I have not been able to figure out how to route the audio output of the Montage back into Cubase. I've been all through the Montage audio settings, but I haven't found anything.

I know how to do this with a Motif XF and the VST. But there is no VST for the Montage (yet?).

I've tried setting up another input bus, but there's nothing to pick other than the Yamaha ASIO input.

I know I could accomplish this by using Cubase's Export To Audio function, but that seems like a hack, and an excuse to avoid learning the right way to do it.

I suspect there's a simple way to do this that I'm not seeing, but I'm not seeing it…

Any MIDI Track sent from Cubase to trigger the Montage tone engine can be routed back to Cubase on a USB audio bus to be recorded. Here's how:

In Cubase prepare the MIDI Track to OUTPUT its data to the Montage. Let's just say it's playing from an AWM2 Part in PART 1 of your Performance.
Press [EDIT]
Select [PART SELECT 1/1] to view Part 1 parameters.
Touch "Common" in the lower left of the screen
Touch "Part Settings" > "General" > set the PART OUTPUT = USB1&2

Next in Cubase, let's setup an Input Connection to receive this audio:
Go to DEVICES > VST CONNECTIONS > select the INPUTS tab
Click "ADD BUS" and add a Stereo Bus: Montage USB1 and Montage USB2
If one already exists notice it is assigned for the Main L&R output of Montage, the new one ("Stereo In 2") automatically increments to the first two assignable USB buses.

Return to the main Project Window and ADD TRACK > AUDIO > add a Stereo Audio track assigned to this new input "Stereo In 2"
Arm this track and record your audio.

EXTRA CREDIT
To fully understand this routing let's take a view of the ROUTING - this can be seen by recalling the PART's Effect Routing screen:
Select the Part and drop into EDIT "Common"
Touch "Effects" > "Routing"

Here's the default look (before) making the assignment, in my example the AWM2 Part (a single Element) is routed through a 3-band EQ, which is routed to INSERT A (Gated Reverb) which is routed to INSERT B (dual Modulator) which is routed to a 2-band EQ. Also appearing is the Send to the System (Reverb and Variation Effects) and the Routing to the the Envelope Follower, as well as the feed to the Main L&R output.

But notice when the reassignment is made to the individual "USB 1&2" the Send to the System Effects are eliminated. The routing to the assignable Outputs removes the signal pre (before) these options. This is how the signal remains pure (just the source)... System Effects are pool effects, everyone swims in the pool... So naturally they are not included in the isolated individual bus assignment.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Bad Mister. That's all useful information.

It turns out, though, that this wasn't my problem. I have now figured it out and can record audio either from MainL&R or USB1&2 as I choose.

My problem was composed of a number of independent misunderstandings on my part:[list]

  • I didn't really understand what the yellow Monitor icon did in the Inspector, both for MIDI and audio tracks.
  • I had fiddled with the Direct Routing section of one of my tracks, and had inadvertently turned off output from it.
  • Probably some other things that I don't remember right now.

Anyway, now I have it all figured out, and I appreciate your attempt to help me even though I was too confused to provide an accurate description of what my problem was.

Now that I've figured out how to do it, I think it would not be accurate to call what you have to do "simple." Cubase is very complicated
