Hi folks,

I just joined here tonight specifically to mention that I tested the Yamaha CP88 (I actually wanted the CP73) and was bitterly disappointed by the ORGANS. They are, I feel, utterly dreadful, I am sorry to say!; such a complete let-down. They sound like a 1980's ROMpler! My 'DX7', with a bit of reverb and drive, sounds better - I am not joking. Perhaps this is why there are hardly any organ demonstrations (by Yamaha promoters) on the likes of You Tube (and I have searched hard).

On the CP88, there is no dedicated ORGAN section; and instead Yamaha have bundled this keyboard-type into the SYNTH section. This, I feel, falls flat on it's behind. I could happily live without physical drawbars if the organ sounds were better. There are no realistic Hammonds; only 60s/70s, church organs and some other non-descriptives.

I wonder, considering Yamaha offer this here file-sharing forum, and promise 6 monthly updates, if they will release some significant improvements (or maybe forum members will upload there own programmings)?

If the organs had been adequate I would have 90% bought the keyboard there and then. And so Yamaha have lost out on a sale here (I hope you are listening guys!).

Ta,

Paul

I have to agree although i like the instrument the lack of great organs and a wider selection of other sounds is putting me off what would otherwise have been a definite purchase!

How realistic they may be subjective, but there are tonewheel (Hammond) organ sounds. The names are not non-descriptive. Hammonds were the models that used what they called drawbars. So anything with Draw or Bars in the name would be what you're looking for. And based on its placement in the list and that one of the other characteristics of tonewheel Hammonds was the key click, Click would be another. so you have:

Bright Bars
Click Organ
Draw Organ 1
All Bars Out
Draw Organ 2

I don't have a CP, but this would be consistent with other Yamahas (also similar to a number of non-Yamahas, for that matter).

An underlying issue is that drawbar organs are not best reproduced via straight sample playback, compared to other methods of sound generation, and the CP is basically a sample-based keyboard. Some of the boards the CP is most similar to are the Nord Piano and Kawai MP11, and those companies took a different approach with those similarly sample-based stage pianos... they omitted the tonewheel organs entirely! Another issue is that the Leslie rotary speaker effect which is so integral to what people associate with the Hammond sound is a difficult sound to get right. Yamaha's implementation is okay for what it is, but there's a reason why people even with dedicated tonewheel organ emulating keyboards still consider paying $500 for a Ventilator pedal just to improve the Leslie emulation. Bottom line: As a rule, organ patches in keyboards without dedicated organ engines are designed to be close enough to get you by in a pinch, but a demanding organ player needs to look at a board with a dedicated organ engine. (And even those are not all equally satisfying.)

Since you decided not to buy the CP, there are some hammer action boards with dedicated organ engines, so you do have options, even though they will fall short of the Yamaha in some other ways, whether in actions, control ergonomics, travel weight, price, some of the non-organ sounds, whatever... you never get everything in one board. But you could look at numerous Kurzweils (least expensive and lightest being the SP6), Korg Grandstage/Kronos, Nord Stage 3, Kawai MP7SE, Roland RD2000/FA-08, Dexibell S9.

Yamaha provides very good hammond sounds on the Montage and MODX. Please add some of them tho the CP series on the next update. Better yet, allow us to add our own and I will add Motif XF Organimation programs.
