In this article, there are these 2 lines:

• INSERT A (when assigned to the A/D INPUT)_
• INSERT B (when assigned to the A/D INPUT)_

I don't understand why there's a reference to "A/D INPUT." Please explain what the point of that is.

Also, I downloaded the EXAMPLE.X7U file and loaded it onto my Montage. I knew enough to save a user file of my own stuff before I loaded this. Others might not, and could lose their work by loading your file. I suggest you add a warning about this to the place where the download link is.

I appreciate the work that's gone into these tutorials. They're very helpful.

Each of the sixteen synth Parts has its own two Insertion Effects, accessible when you select the individual Part, 1-16.
While the COMMON area is selected, this is where parameters and resources for the A/D input Part are found.

The INSERT A and INSERT B parameters that appear here on the Common/Audio level of editinig are referring to the two Insertion Effect blocks reserved (dedicated) for the A/D Input Part. If no Insert Effect is assigned to the A/D In, the assignments here are unused... and will remain blank. If you select an Insertion Effect type for the AD Part, the available parameters for controller assign will appear on the list.

A microphone or other device plugged into the Montage can be assigned its own dual Insertion Effects, and controllers can be assigned to manipulate parameters of the A/D input Part (this is new)! This includes Volume, a Reverb and Variation Send amount, in addition to Insert Effect parameters.

Glad to be able to be of some help.

I would suggest that you add the same thing right above the download link at the bottom of the page, in case someone skips down to the end and doesn't happen to see the warning. Experience with my computer science students has taught me that making things blatantly obvious can be really useful.

I've just got a Montage 8 and I'm still learning the ropes. This is my first real exposure to Yamaha keyboards so my terminology is a bit sketchy at the moment.

So I went through Programming Basics 2 and all was okay so then I tried to apply it to a new AWM init. I set the part to OB Saw and linked assign knob 1 to destination cutoff and while in edit->part1->common sure enough assign knob 1 does change the cutoff. However if I go back to home it no longer applies, I turn assign knob 1 and the cutoff isn't applied. Go back into edit->part1->common and it's working again.

I'm obviously missing a step - any hints?

I found it!

In Motion control I had to access "edit common control settings" and then set assign knob 1 to "part 1 assign"

So if my understanding is correct, at the part level all 8 knobs can be assigned to different destinations but as soon as you get to the home level there's another set of assignments that take precedence?

No. They are additional...
At the Part level of editing each Part has its own 8 Knobs that can be assigned to any parameter of your choice. Each Part has access to its own set of 24 Knob parameters via the three rows of selections: Tone, EQ/FX, ARP/MS. So each Part has 24 dedicated Knobs plus its own 8 Assignable Knobs.

These are in addition to the CommonAudio level of editing. When "COMMON" is selected, the 24 Knobbed parameters will affect all Parts in common...and any parameter assignments will be to shared assists (System Effects, Master Effects, Master EQ, Audio Input). Plus this level of editing allows you to link the Super Knob to the individual Part's assignable knobs (first 8 only).

You can choose to *link* any of the first 8 Part's Assignable Knobs to the Super Knob... You do so on the Common/Audio assign screen. The link consists of a Part # and a Knob #.

Say you setup an assignment on the Common/Audio level where "Part 1 Assign 1" is the assignment... what this means is when you drop down to edit Part 1, and assign its first Assignable Knob to control "Volume" - then you've created two situations where volume will change...
1) when you move the Super Knob
2) when you select "Part 1" and you move Assign Knob 1

The "Part 1 Assign 1" setting means that the Super Knob will change whatever you assign to Knob 1 in Part 1.
Don't let this confuse you, it can be multiple things simultaneously.

You can choose which parameters you want to link to the Super Knob's movement. Take your time. Sometimes there is an advantage to linking to the Super Knob - particularly when you want to change several parameters simultaneously. Sometimes you'd rather not have a parameter linked. This is what it is all about.
