Ready but not willing perhaps.

Tried two different USB formatted to Montage devices.

Downloaded zip twice from Yamaha

While holding down up cursor and utility the update is not being recognized.

Montage screen just pops up as usual.

Help appreciated!

Formatting USB flash drive

You should format the USB flash drive only with this instrument Montage. A USB flash drive formatted on another device may not operate properly.
I used the USB like this picture and Format the USB on Montage by Press the Utility button

Hello Jayeson - it is VITAL that NOTHING else be on the Montage=formatted USB drive. Just the update file all alone - and that the USB NOT be one of those smart-ass ones with partitions or programs built into it. I keep an old 2Mb USB for the purpose - it does nothing but updates, Having downloaded and unzipped the file with all the various language instructions and 'Read Me' folders thereon to a genral purpose USB, I then copy JUST the update file itself to my update USB - works every time.

Thanks for the suggestions fellow Monty's

Both USB sticks I tried had nothing but 1.51 on them.

Both had been formatted on Montage

One of these USB's I used for the 1.5 update with no problem

Followed the exact same procedure this time.

All of my 8 libraries are full. Could this possibly affect something?

I wouldn't think that the hardware strapping (holding down the proper key combination) would check for space free or anything else. It doesn't check for a valid firmware file since it should load with a "NG" message if you didn't have the firmware image on the USB stick.

I would go unto the UTILITY section and see if the USB stick shows up as a save/load option. In other words, if Montage is recognizing the device at all. Even without any valid files (only the firmware) - Montage should be able to show "USB" as a source/destination choice in the file/drive related menus.

If that checks out, I would wonder if hitting the key combination is happening at the right time (soon enough) and if letting go is at the right time (late enough).

Yes Jason. The file shows up on the USB on the Montage screen. I hold down cursor snd utility together then power on. Have tried both releasing buttons when Yamaha emblem appears and when Montage appears. Still no luck

When I was fooling with the key combination - I would just keep holding down the key combination until the different (firmware program) screen showed up. If you're upgrading from v1.50 - there may be timing differences since there's some initialization-time kind of error with v1.50 - so something may require you to hold the key combination longer.

Lots of others have had success going from v1.50 to v1.51 - so I wouldn't think there's anything drastically different.

Since this is not your first firmware upgrade rodeo, I'm assuming you're generally "doing it right".

Yikes! Have run Disk Utility on both USB drives and erased them again. Have used a different unzipper for the 1.51 update. Have tried holding the up cursor and utility button longer and shorter.

I do notice when formatting the USB's that the circle starts going to the left and stops at about 9 o'clock. Almost like it doesn't complete.
Should the circle go all the way around during formatting?

Getting ready to buy another USB at this point, even though one has only been used for Montage since I bought it.

Help appreciated!

SUCCESS!! On my latest attempt I powered on the board, then held down the cursor up and utility key. That was the first time it recognized the update.

It seemed to be quite sensitive as to when to hold the buttons down.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm back in bidness baby!

Format it using the computer to see if it finalizes. Then format it again on the Montage. Copy some ordinary user or library files to see if Montage recognizes and loads those. I have every Montage user and library file on my drive along with the program file and it works every time. It should only be looking for the file with a program extension and not any other file extension. Of course the program file must be in the root directory and not appear as a zip file or be located in a folder. I know that you know the drill.

I see you've fixed it. I have always held those buttons down prior to powering on. Who knows what it's doing.

[CURSOR UP] + [UTILITY] during Power On = updater
