No DAW Control and NO VST Editor? What else has been cut from the MOXF?

Hey guys,

I was eagerly looking for the MODX to replace my MOXF as a part of my home studio. For me, as a MOXF user, the main question was not how much of the Montage was available in MODX (which could be guessed by knowing the pattern so far), but how much of MOXF was cut down in the process. I would gladly give up the sequencer as I am using Cubase for that, but there are two things I found in the just-released FAQ that are bugging me greatly:

1. NO DAW Control. I was expecting to have that in MODX, considering it was added in the Montage 2.5 firmware update. Can you clarify if there are plans to add this feature to MODX in a future update as well.

2. NO VST Editor and no plans for such? I am currently using the MOXF VST Editor extensively to do voice and mix changes while working inside Cubase with the benefit to have all these changes saved and recalled in my Cubase session. How am I supposed to do drum mixing for particular Cubase project with the new MODX? Same applies to all voice changes...

Also, can somebody clarify if the audio outputs of the new MODX are balanced or not?

DAW Remote Control (for Cubase, Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools) was just recently added to the top-of-the-line MONTAGE in version 2.5;
I believe the plan is to have the MODX follow the lead of the flagship wherever possible, but it may be a version or two behind.

As I understand there will be similar tools to what is available for MONTAGE. so you know, MODX CONNECT is a VST/AU Utility designed to capture, store and restore all the settings (Performance setup) and it bundles them with the Project... it can be setup, like the MOXF Editor VST, to restore your settings when you open your Project. It can operate completely in the background once setup with your preferences.

It can automatically STORE when you SAVE the Cubase .CPR Project File, and it can automatically restore your exact settings when next you open the Project.

If you manually wish to store and manage your Cubase setups, you can access the MediaBay/Sound Browser directly from the MODX CONNECT Utility. This will allow you to organize, rank, all your data for future use.

So while there is no Editor function in the MODX CONNECT utility, the store/restore function is handled completely... customized for each Project. This also means that you do not have to keep the setup in the internal MODX, all the sounds you used will be restored to the synth by the CONNECT utility.

In the MOXF you handled just 384 Normal Voices + 32 Drum Kit Voices in the User sound set. It’s probably the biggest thing that is different is that there are no Voices.
What was a Voice is now a Single Part in a Performance.
It would be like a MOXF MIXING with only Part 1 occupied... meaning Parts 2-16 are empty awaiting other selections.
In the MOXF you had 64 Song Mixing and 64 Pattern Mixing Programs total.
Every MODX Program is a 16-slot Performance.
The User Bank of the MODX is like having 640 Mixing setups.
Then, all 640 setups can become a Library.
You can have 8 Libraries... on board at any one time
That’s some 5120 “Mixing” setups in Libraries, plus the 640 in User.

To say that MODX has more memory space onboard than the MOXF is like an understatement of monumental proportions.

Do not worry about how you will mix the drums... the on screen capabilities of the MODX also go far beyond those available in the MOXF...
You’ll mix your drums using the Faders (when you select a Part containing a Drum Kit, you can have real-time access to any eight drum sounds via the front panel sliders. This is usually enough to handle most drum kit mixing needs... if you need more open another Part for drums and get eight more. Or enlist the Super Knob System to Control the mix for you.

The MODX Main L&R Outputs Are unbalanced.

Hey Bad Mister, thanks for the answers.

I realize there will be some workflow differences when you change generations... as long as the new generation can fill the required roles, it's OK.
One more question, if I may... Can you load MIDI files (created in Cubase using a multi-voice performance in MODX) as songs in MODX? For playback.

Yes. You can keep as many as 128 MIDI Files (Songs) in the internal memory, each linked to the Performance that contains the sounds to play it back.

You only need to load a MIDI File once. It remains in the [UTILITY] > “Contents” > “Data Utility” > “SONG” Folder.. until you either Delete it or initialize your entire internal memory.
