Hi,
I'm curious as to how to control the montage purely over midi, and set up a midi file that would set various channels to different sounds? As far as I can tell from the documentation, you can use bank select messages to select performances, however, there are different bank select values to select single, or multi voice ones, and the data list doesn't show, at least in textual form, which is which. So, a few questions.
1. what happens if you select a multi performance using the single bank msb/lsb values? Does it just assign it's first part's sound to the specified channel?
2. conversely, if selecting a multi performance, I would assume it's best to select and play these using channel 1 from the sequencer?

Bumping an old thread here, hope that's ok!
Hopefully I can phrase the question posed in the OP in a clearer manner now. 🙂
Essentially it is this. If I want to sequence with the montage as a tone generator, what bank select and program change messages should I use to set up the (up to) 16 sounds I'll be using? If I understand the data list correctly, I should use a bank msb of 63, and an lsb of 0, as I would do on any previous motif synth.
Where the confusion comes though is, what happens if I use, say, a 4 part performance using the previous mentioned bank values? Is only 1 sound of the 4 parts selected, based on the channel used?
Perhaps, ultimately, the montage isn't designed for this type of oldskool pure midi sequencing as previous tone generators were.

I'll have to go back to the Montage to test - but I believe the Multi-Part region of MSB/LSB+PC would switch to a preset performance while the Single-Part region of MSB/LSB+PC would change the current performance by replacing whatever PART is in the target MIDI channel for the MSB/LSB+PC with the PART #1 associated with the performance that would otherwise be targeted by the MSB/LSB+PC.
It is very easy to use MSB/LSB+PC to change each PART of your current performance with the associated PART1 part from another preset performance.
There are, however, both options available. To either bank switch to another performance entirely - or use the bank switch to change the individual PART(s) within your current performance.

Awesome! I had a feeling that's how it would operate, where the single region of bank select messages would take the part 1 from the performance and place it into the targeted part.
A couple of followup questions.
1. Does changing the performance also set the reverb/variation effects to what is set with each one?
2. Related, it feels weird to me that cc93, chorus isn't supported! and variation makes me feel like I'm talking about XG again. Maybe it's time to sequence something on my mu2000? 😀

If you recall a Multi Part Performance all settings are recalled as stored.

That causes me to smile... I have exactly the opposite reaction. CC93 is the one that is so very GM/XG... I feel like, finally, back to the Variation Effects (back to SY days). GM was 91 Reverb, 93 Chorus....
SY85/TG500 had the "Variation" Effect as the second SYSTEM Effect - the concept of the "Chorus" Effect was what you got in a GM/XG module - it was a GM Spec requirement that Effect 1 was Reverb and the other was a Chorus. But Yamaha always included all your time delay types from Phasers, Flangers, Delays and Echoes, in addition to the Chorus. So calling it a "Variation" Effect would make way more sense.
And since now, with that second System Effect you can select from Reverbs, Delays, Flangers, Phasers, Tremolo, Rotary Speaker, Distortion, Compresor/Limiters, Wah-wah, Lo-Fi, Tech, Vocoders, etc., etc., etc. in addition to Chorus... seems silly to just call it "Chorus" in light of all the other things you can do with it. It's your variable effect... so I like "Variation" way, way better than "Chorus" which, is truly GM-based, exactly as originally mandated by the GM spec!
