Hello,

I was checking the Montage's pedal connections and I can't find in the manual which parameters are assignable to a foot switch.
I'm interested to know what you can do with the assignable foot switch and particularly if you can change the octave range with it.

You can Reset the Octave to normal with the Foot Switch. See page 170 of your Reference Manual. The Foot Switch assignment is global for the Montage and is found on the [UTILITY] > "Settings" > "MIDI I/O" screen

FS Assign (Footswitch Assign Control Number)
Determines the Control Change number generated by using the Footswitch connected to the FOOT SWITCH [ASSIGNABLE] jack. Even when the instrument receives MIDI message with the same Control Change Number specified here from the external equipment, the instrument assumes that the message is generated by using the Footswitch.
Settings: Off, 1 – 95, Arp SW, MS SW, Play/Stop, Live Set+, Live Set-, Oct Reset

Thank you!
So the only way to change the octave range + or - is to push the buttons... I was hoping for a way to assign that function to the pedal!

You have a huge number of available program slots. Simply program the Performance set to the Octave you need, place them next to each other in a LIVE SET, and use the Foot Switch to advance through your programs. Easy enough.

Can you get the foot switch to start and stop the arp?

The closest assignment (page 170 of reference manual) is "ARP SW". Page 175 of the Montage Data List shows this is the default setting for the foot switch. This would toggle the "Arpeggio Master Switch" (ON/OFF).

Turning the Arpeggio Master Switch ON will not "start" the arpeggio. You would have to rearm it.

One way to start/stop the ARP would be to have ARP #1 (for example) as your active ARP and ARP #2 as a muted arp (Mute 4/4). When you want the ARP to stop sounding - switch to ARP #2. When you want the ARP to start sounding again, switch to ARP #1. The whole time the ARP can stay triggered - just the ARP #2 is playing rests instead of playing sounding notes (still "playing" notes - just not sounding).

yeah, but I would need to do that for every sound.. a bit too work intensive.. gotta be an easier way.. how did they not think of this?

I do understand what you are saying - it would be great to have a global parameter so you can leverage this global feature to stop/start an ARP without having to set anything up. Unfortunately, I'm not aware such a beast exists. I've had a similar wish in the past - so I've been down this road.

Furthermore, foot control for toggling ARP number is not a feature that I am aware of. Which would require setup which is too hard, by your standards, to do even if it did exist (at least within the context of how it would be applied with today's ARP behavior).

From philosophical to practical:

One thing you could do is use a trigger mode as "toggle" instead of "gate". This way, you can press a key to start your arp - and press the same key a second time to stop it (instead of holding the key down). Again, it requires setup for every performance you want to do this with - but I think you may be drawing the short straw in terms of setup/programming requirements for what you want to do.

You would think that was a obvious need to start and stop drums bc fingers are busy on keyboard.... Thanks.. Assigning it to highest or lowest key on the keyboard is the workaround I have been using.. Sure would be nice if Yamaha would make it a reality.. if you assign that function to a key, it should be able to assign it to a foot pedal, just reroute the trigger... Seems like it would be a software update away..

Typically, Arpeggios require information from the keyboard (the physical keyboard) in order to intelligently work. Your Foot Switch idea does not provide enough information for the Arpeggios to work properly. The Foot Switch could send a start command however, the Arpeggiator also requires note information to tell it what KEY to play in and what CHORD quality to outline. So don't expect a software update for your particular idea... Arps require both a note-on trigger and chord intelligent information to work, properly.

A Pattern (sequenced phrase) can just use a Play command because it is not interactive in the same way as an Arpeggio.

Hi Bad Mister,

You do such a great job at answering the hard questions.
I have been a fan of yours and Yamaha Workstations since the MOX series.
I am upgrading organ settings on my 71 and 61 Montage. There is a bit of a learning curve, as usual.

Question.
I am having a challenge getting the FS parameters on the keyboard.
I went to your forum and saw that System->MIDI I/O setting would get me to the assignment for FS #1
I must have missed the setting in the The Fs Assign which had Arp SW and there choices.

Thanks for helping me get the rotary for the Organ working on my FS.

Sincerely and creatively,

Please see the following thread from 3+ years ago, on this subject... it covers most everything you’ll need to know about this subject: stick with it, it covers what you need...
