Hi there, I've connected my Montage to my laptop and it's happily sending midi data into ableton live. Only problem is that the sustain pedal isn't sending data. yet the sustain pedal is plugged in normally and works fine with the montage playing its own sounds locally. is there some setting that enables the pedals to send midi data that I need to turn on? thanks

I do not see this issue.
TIMESTAMP IN PORT STATUS DATA1 DATA2 CHAN NOTE EVENT
0000820D 1 -- B0 40 7F 1 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008217 1 -- B1 40 7F 2 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008217 1 -- B2 40 7F 3 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008217 1 -- B3 40 7F 4 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008217 1 -- B4 40 7F 5 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008645 1 -- B0 40 00 1 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008645 1 -- B1 40 00 2 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008645 1 -- B2 40 00 3 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008646 1 -- B3 40 00 4 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
00008646 1 -- B4 40 00 5 --- CC: Pedal (Sustain)
Active PARTs will send CC 64 (hex 0x40, shown above after the Bn which means CC and "n" is he MIDI channel, 0=PART1, 1=PART2 and so on).

If you have no active PARTs, then sustain may not send anything.

If you have the MIDI I/O mode set to MIDI (instead of USB) - then your PC will not see any MIDI activity including sustain.

On the screen with tone generator settings, I made sure to validate my sustain pedal matched what I was using at the time (an FC5 simple momentary switch).

I do not see any place where you can prevent sustain from sending MIDI messages as long as you are in normal keyboard playing mode. I don't have the DAW Transport mode - so I'm not sure what happens in that mode. I do not see why sustain would be interpreted differently.

Here is what is most likely happening.

MIDI is not sound. It is a series of coded messages that can be documented and sent back to the synth engine by your DAW software. Although you can hear it working when you play live, it is a different matter when recording it.

Because MIDI is not sound, but a series of coded messages, if your Foot is on the Sustain Pedal prior to the actual start of recording, the Control Change 64 message will not be documented (you must press the pedal AFTER recording begins). If you do not *record* the cc64 = On message although the sound sustains while your playing, when you playback your actual recorded data, since there is no Sustain On message, the playback will not contain the necessary message to engage the Sustain function.

Look at your Event list or Piano Roll for the Sustain cc64 On message, make sure your cc64 On message was documented.
Sustain On can be any cc64 value between 64-127.

Also, you must record cc64 = 0 (Sustain Off) while the Track is still in record, otherwise the instrument sound on that channel will be left in a state where it will behave as if the Sustain Pedal were being held.
