The 3.0 Supplementary Manual says you can connect a MIDI keyboard via USB to a Montage. But it warns:

Supported MIDI equipment: MIDI devices that are USB MIDI class compliant and devices tested by Yamaha
* For a list of devices tested by Yamaha, refer to the link below
https://www.yamaha.com/2/montage
NOTE The maximum rated value of the [USB TO DEVICE] is 5V/500mA. Do not connect to USB devices that exceed the rated value, since such devices may cause damage to the instrument.

Unfortunately, the link does not go to the promised list. Where can I find that list?

Specifically, is it safe to connect a Roli Rise 25 to a Montage in this manner?

... I reported the same thing Sep. 30th 2019. Also had other broken/missing-link/stale-info type reports.

Normally I post suggestions about yamahasynth. Maybe this isn't the place - but it's the best I have for now.

https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/montage/faq.html#product-tabs

This page shows:
MONTAGE has DAW Remote function?
No.
I'm not sure that's current.

This one may still apply - but now there are some limited editing options.
MONTAGE has Fully-functional Sequencer?
No. MONTAGE just has the simple sequencer "Performance Recorder". It does not have edit function.

The Montage new features document (rev g0, page 41) :
* For a list of devices tested by Yamaha, refer to the link below
https://www.yamaha.com/2/montage
The link doesn't bring me to any tested device list. I couldn't find a list of devices tested by Yamaha by milling around other tabs on that site. Not sure if this information is available anywhere yet.

... related to the roli - a bunch of threads have ended up getting deleted. There was a previous thread that, among other topics, covered someone with a question on if it's safe/advisable to connect a Roli Rise to Montage. The suggestion was "try it" and the result was "it works".

Here's some of the content from cache:

any settings needed or USB midi host?

Hi I plugged a novation mono circuit into the usb port (where flash drive goes). I tried plugging it in and it seems to be working fine so far. Are there any Montage midi settings I should be aware of to avoid strange occurances (unless intended):D

The one thing I cant seem to do is sync the montage to the tempo of the other device unless I do it manually.

USB MIDI Host
With MONTAGE OS v3.0 and MODX OS v2.0 you can now connect a MIDI controller directly to the USB TO DEVICE Port on the back. This allows you to connect MIDI keyboard controllers, drum pads other alternative controllers with a simple USB MIDI cable.

Does the Montage tempo clock display update when syncing using the usb to another device? I hear the tempo change but the tempo keeps saying 90. Also when recording the recorder is late and the tempo changes or something. How do get the Montage to tempo slave to another device so the recording is spot on? I have montage set to receive clock and not send clock and vice versa on the other device that is sending note data. BUt I still have to manually change the montage tempo to match the other device before recording.

Thanks I will use the midi cables and try it. The usb does work to receive some great midi data though but I can use the traditional way or even go through my DAW as a connnection and back to the montage. I just wanted to see how far i can go without my computer. These new features are so cool. Man it has solved so many things I was trying to do 🙂

On a related note, has anyone tried connecting a Roli Seaboard to the Montage via USB yet? I'm slightly scared of the note about exceeding the current draw might damage the Montage but I *think* the RISE 25 only draws 500mA

Christine,
I have a Roli but didn't try connecting it via the USB because looking at the thread BM has linked to above, it appears that the USB to device connection with play all parts at the same time - so it doesn't seem to be something that will fit well with the Roli scenario where the part is duplicated and separate channels are used.

@Sean
You have a Roli, plug it in... then read my post again. Not sure you understood it correctly.

If you have keyboard control OFF on PARTs that match the MIDI channel(s) Roli is sending to - these PARTs will all _individually_ receive MIDI data per those channels you have configured for Roli to transmit.

The rules start to change for PART(s) with Keyboard Control=ON (if matching the MIDI channel). Depending on the mode, some items such as certain CCs may be filtered from the PART(s) and sent to the common performance level instead. But note information (when matching any of the channel(s) that the kbd control=ON PART(s) identify as) are sent to all the PART(s) with keyboard control=on.

There are also different nuances concerning what MIDI information gets "echoed" out to MIDI out from Montage - depends on the mode and PART (channel) and PART properties.

The details of how different modes affect what happens to incoming MIDI data from a device connected to the "USB to Device" port is details in the "New Features" PDF which is bundled with the 3.0 firmware.

So you have some setup flexibility with Roli certainly as you can assign a range of midi channels through its setup software.

https://rolisupport.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/36000019154-guide-controlling-your-instrument-with-the-seaboard

Also folks were asking for simultaneous use of an external MIDI keyboard while also using USB mode to connect a computer - and wanted the MIDI data to come in through Port-1. Use of the "USB to Device" USB controller seems to satisfy this request as, from what I can tell, these messages are not thrown on Port-3. Is says these will be sent out the PARTs they come in on (or parallel channels in a keyboard control = on group) which implies this will all be sent to Port-1.

BM,
Yes I misunderstood - I have plugged in the Roli and it does indeed work. Thank you

Maybe this thread is somewhere - but wasn't showing up under the original title.

Thanks. I just tried it and it works! No apparent damage to the Montage.
