I have four sections in an existing pattern in which I want to add/ record thru A/D line input, different rhythm guitar strums ("audio") - section B= 16 measures, section C=32 measures, section E=8 measures and section F=40.

I set up for Integrating Sequencing, sample+note with a measure start- matching the start/stop length of my sections. I start with section B, and select key bank C3. Hit rec twice then start the sequencer, and my audio is added in perfect sync. I audition to make sure then hit OK. Now I want to record to section C. I chose a different key bank, follow the same remaining steps. when I am done sampling to Section C, and all sounds goods, I returned to section B, and find that the keybank C3 audio sample is gone, replaced with my section C sample with note on D3. I am confused thinking I can take an empty track (15) and the integrated sequencer will allow me to record and add the four audio samples I want on different key banks, properly assigning note on instructions on the four pattern sections where I recorded the samples. NOT?????? My last step, would then be to copy two of these samples over to two other sections of matching lengths rather than recording the same audio over again. To do all the above, I am thinking I end up with six phrases, using 4-Waves, 4-Waveforms and 4-Sample Voices, True???

I did read thru the manual and the seqsample power user guide, It took me this far, now I am still stuck........

Sorry, I could not follow that - seems you are mixing up Section B with Section D or I am missing something. You should be able to record your guitar to each Section independently without it changing your previous recording - Each Phrase you record should be autonomous and independent. Please make sure you are giving us the right information here. I am confused trying to follow what you did. What does Section B and Section D have to do with each other and which is it you do your second recording into...?

You are so right, my references were sooooo wrong. My apologies. I corrected my section references in my earlier post. Let me also provide a complete map of my pattern. It will be assembled as a song constructed as follows A-B-C-D-E-H-D-F. The four strum phrases noted below indicate the sections when I am trying to add sample. Then I want to copy those phrases over to other sections.

A- 16 measure intro - no strum phrase
B- 16 measure intro - add strum phrase 1
C- 32 measure verse - add strum phrase 2
D- 16 measure chorus - copy strum phrase 1
E- 8 measure bridge - add strum phrase 3
H- 32 measure verse - copy strum phrase 2
D- 16 measure chorus - copy strum phrase 1
F- 40 measure outro - add strum phrase 4

I am a conceptual thinker and if I can't understand the overall working of sampling, I have a tough time using it with any consistency. Again, I read the manual and your earlier posts and power user guides so I don't want to burden you with repeating, hopefully just filling in the gaps in my thinking to turn on my lights of understanding.

Once I get everything straight about creating the new samples inside my pattern - can I then copy them to other sections just like I would copy any other user phrase I recorded into the sequencer, or is there a different method when the phrases are sampled data? Causes me to ask about my User Phrases, generally.....by example, If I copy user phrase 003 recorded on track 1 TO the same track but on another section, when I check my patches, shouldn't I then see user 003 appearing on that track in both sections?

Finally, let me ask about WAVEFORMS and Sample Voices. The manual says a WAVEFORM is the group of key banks to which sample data [waves?] is assigned. Does that mean I can take all of my four samples / waves all on different notes (keybanks) and form one WAVEFORM? Then, is it that WAVEFORM that becomes Sample Voice? Its assigned for use only in that pattern. I found, by accident, a screen showing me all my sample voices in my pattern. Now I can't navigate back to it. Can you lead me back? If I want to create and use samples (waveforms) it more than just one song or pattern, I then need to make it a User Voice, correct?

UPDATE: I tried to experiment a bit to try to learn more on my own. Unfortunately, still stuck...What I tried to do first was start with a clean slate. First in Integrated Sampling, JOB, I did a DELETE ALL to erase (I thought) all waves, wave forms and samples. Then in PATTERN MODE, I performed and ALL Section clear on my Pattern Track 15 where I want to place my note on instructions for my samples on various sections. Then I tried to record my first sample. After recording it, to Section B, I stopped to investigate a bit and discovered two things 1) when looking thru the EDIT function in Integrated Sampling, I found (and auditioned to verify) my sample. It appears as WAVEFORM 001 BUT using WAVE 003, why not 001? I don't have any other samples??? 2) Although I set up to record this note-on instruction ONLY to Section B of my Pattern, it was added to ALL Sections...My goal is to record the four samples in to specific sections, then put them all on the same waveform, then copy over a couple to other sections to complete my mix. I hope you can set me straight on all this. THANKS VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP

How come questions are difficult most times... But you deleted your previous sample recordings. The memory was not actually wiped clean... All that happens is the operating system does something like remove the first character of the data block (I'm not a computer geek) so it still has your first two attempts in memory, it has simply been placed in the trash.

Whether you are successful or not is not what the memory is calculating. It counts attempts. So this is "take 3" as they say in the movies. Any way that's why it knows it's your third attempt. If you want it to count only good attempt, you can rename what you consider a "keeper" when you decide it is.

Deleting All simply took the attempt out of the catalog. To really completely clear the slate you'd need to start an entirely new session from power on. Remember, the way the Motif deals with Waveform data is direct it to a dynamic location on your DIMMs. It typically finds the lowest empty location (unless you direct it elsewhere) and although 128 samples can occupy a Waveform, only two can sound from any one key bank.

What that means is a mono or a stereo waveform can be played. A Key Bank is defined by a Note number range and a Velocity range. So you stack vertically -so that each velocity a different stereo wave plays... You divide your data horizontally across a range of keys so each key has a different stero sample. So at maximums you have 128 velocities 0-127, and 127 Keys C-2 thru G8; mostly you do not even approach the maximums. You build 2-5 way velocity switches and key ranges depends on the instrument but the more samples across the range of pitches the better the sound is able to play.

It has been a while since I've used an ES, however, you may have turned off or deactivated some of the settings or are using a slightly different methodology. Normally, if you don't point the data specifically, the ES will create a new User Phrase for each recording into a Pattern Section. Pattern mode can be set to recall automatically, the Voice that you used to record each Phrase. However, if opt out on this, then each Track will only recall one Voice that remains throughout all Sections.

The former is called "Phrase Voice" - and means that each Recording to a Track will memorize the Voice used at the time you record it. The Voice location information is embedded in the "header" of that particular User Phrase number.

The second condition is called "Track Voice" - this is when the same Voice is to be used on this Track for all Sections. This makes it easy to change your mind about the instrument assigned to a Track. Change the voice and all Sections play with your new Voice selection.

When you are recording audio phrases to the Integrated Sampler you must opt in and use the PHRASE VOICE option. It will allow each recording you do to the track you've designated for audio to be recorded and no matter when you recall that phrase number the Voice used to create is automatically recalled. When sampling audio the Voice that was used when it was created is the only one that will ever make sense for this data. In other words, never would you really want to separate this MIDI zone-on event from this particular audio sample. You want the "phrase" (which is the MIDI note-on) and "voice" used to create the sound, always associated together. This is why your record type is "sample+note".

I mention all of that because you are definitely recording into the same Phrase number. Each Section you want to have its own Phrase number, while targeting a new KeyBank within the same Waveform. Normally, the sequencer automatically selects the next empty Phrase when you move to another SECTION... unless you have already "patched" the phrase number to the Section, before you recorded.
From Pattern
Press [F4] PATCH
This is where the ES keeps track of which phrases you have already recorded. Make sure you are recording into a blank Phrase.
Same Voice
Different target Key

I will have to find the old articles on sampling in the ES Sequencer to give you step-by-step instructions. But in general when you do your setup for recording (sampling) into the sequencer the dialog box and options you set are critical.

Thanks for this...I think the Phrase / Track header setting will solve my problem of writing over my samples and I understand about when/ if DIMM memory is really erased. I DO have and have read your two Power User sampling articles. Very helpful getting me this far, but......Couple questions from my last two posts are still unresolved. 1) When I am sampling different phrases (8-32 measures) in pattern mode, can I put them all into the same waveform or will Motif always create new waveforms for each such sample. By default, Motif seems to be creating a new Waveform for every new sample I record. Is this too dependent on my Phrase/Tracker header setting? 2) To copy an existing sample in a pattern to other parts within the same pattern, do I follow the same procedure (PATTERN-JOB) as I would copy any other User phrase or must I do it by recording / triggering the sample to play in the new section. 3) Building blocks - Waves are made from recording audio samples that are placed together to make WaveForms (which I can rename) and the Sample Voice = the Waveform. True/ False 3) Can I move (as opposed to copy) a waveform / sample voice from one pattern track to another? 4) Finally, can you help direct me to the screen which shows all the sample voices assigned to a pattern? I found it once, but no more........

Phil,

Been trying to read, learn, resolve as much as I can on my own. At this point, I think I understand what I need to know /do for my specific and very limited integrated sampling application. Perhaps, you can just confirm and/or correct my understandings here: I ONLY want to use integrating sampling in pattern or song mode to record phrases (rhythm guitar strums from a VST) that I will insert into a pattern track, then loop and move them around within songs I construct. When I am done, I then want to be able to play and playback everything through my Motif alone, instead of having to hook up my laptop and run Cubase with VST plug-ins. I am not seeking to stretch, trim or do anything to these phrases other than editing them like I might edit any preset voices. If I am going to record more than one phrase on the same track, I need to make sure my track header is OFF to allow phrase heading. Every phrase (sample)I record creates a new wave and new waveform so I don't have to worry about keybanks. They can all be triggered (note-on) the same kaybank, C3 for example. I think that's all I need to know / confirm. Have I got it straight?

By setting up to sample into the sequencer, you can have the Motif ES automatically place and loop your recording into Pattern Tracks. Use the Record TYPE = "sample+note". And use the TRIGGER MODE = meas (measure) and Rec pre-count - this will allow the Integrated Sampling Sequencer to automatically punch you IN and OUT at the appropriate times, automatically creating a sample accurate loop.

When I am done, I then want to be able to play and playback everything through my Motif alone, instead of having to hook up my laptop and run Cubase with VST plug-ins. I am not seeking to stretch, trim or do anything to these phrases other than editing them like I might edit any preset voices. Sounds like a plan, let us know if you get stuck.
