I do a search and get a list of results. I tap on a result and it demands I log in and then takes me to compose a new post. There is apparently no way to see the post I searched for.

I "never" use the built-in search to look for forum posts. However, I was looking for an article today using the same search mechanism and it did return back results for forum posts that matched what I was looking for.
I'm not sure which browser/OS/etc you're using when search wasn't working. For me, when it was working, I was under Windows 10 using Chrome (std. version).

I would not be surprised if your login fix also fixed the problem I was having with search on this forum.
Now if I could only remember what I was searching for the other day…. 😀
