Good morning,

Can anybody point me in the right direction? I am trying to create a Part where I have a Clav with a Wah and a Rhodes with a Phaser. The FC2 would simultaneously control the Wah and the Phaser.

I spent way too much time trying to figure this out with no success, If anybody can point me in the right direction or provide instruction on how to achieve this I would really appreciate it.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Eduardo

Eduardo[/quotePost]To understand how an FC7 Pedal (plugged into Foot Controller 2) becomes a Pedal Wah, you can study the Preset Performance "PedalWah Clavi FC2"... This performance is already programmed so that the "VCM Pedal Wah" Insertion Effect is assigned along with control over the Part's Cutoff Frequency.

Because your physical controllers, like the Foot Controllers, can be programmed on a per Performance basis, you will find that on this particular Performance the Foot Controller 2 has been set to use CC4 [Foot Control] which is a Control Change number without a specific parameter Destination -- this means you can, on a per program basis, decide what exactly it is assigned to manipulate. Let's take a look:

From the HOME screen:
Press [EDIT] > touch "Control" > touch "Control Number"
Here you will see that for this Performance the Foot Controller 2 is set to generate CC# 4
Now any parameter DESTINATION assigned to "Foot Controller 2" as its SOURCE will be manipulated by its movement.
(Important Note: Foot Controllers typically default to maximum 127 when initially recalled. Anticipate that the FC will be sending 127 when you initially recall the Performance).

Now within the PART, you will find that Foot Controller 2 is assigned to manipulate the Pedal Wah INSERTION EFFECT (A)
Press the [PART SELECT_MUTE/SOLO] button and SELECT "Part 1" for editing
Touch "Mod/Control" > touch "Control Assign"
Make sure the "Auto Select" box is active (green)
Then move your Foot Controller 2 to recall and review its assignments
You will see that SOURCE = Foot Ctrl 2 is assigned to manipulate DESTINATION = "InsA PdlCtrl" (Insertion Effect A, Pedal Control) and "Cutoff" (Filter Cutoff).

Explore this Performance and its settings for how this is done... The INSERTION EFFECTs are the two Effect processors (A and B) that can be assigned to each of your KBD CTRL Parts. If you navigate to this PART's "Effect" > "Routing" screen you will see that INSERT A is assigned the "VCM Pedal Wah" Effect. You can also select and edit ("INS A") its settings.

Controlling the Phaser with FC2
You do not mention which Rhodes (electric piano) sound you wish to use. It would be extremely helpful (in helping you) to know if it already contains the Phaser and what Controller(s) are assigned to activate that Phaser. Also helpful would be whether the electric piano you want to use has the Phaser as a SYSTEM or INSERTION EFFECT. It could be either
As a System Effect - all Parts have an opportunity to 'share' the processing... as each Part has a SEND amount to System Effects. The signals are combined and sent to the processor all together and returned to the Stereo Output
As an Insertion Effect - the Part has exclusive access to the processor... it is, for all intents and purposes, an integral part of the instrument. You can even control which of the Oscillators (Elements) get routed to one, the other, both, or neither of the Insertion Effects

__Merging a Performance will NOT bring along the SYSTEM Effects (Rev/Var) but will bring along any INSERTION Effects along with their Controller assignments. Insertion Effects are considered attached to the instrument.
__So without having to write a long involved reply that covers all possibilities - perhaps you can be a bit more descriptive in which Clavi and which EP you want to combine and where the Effects on each are located.

Once you know where the Phaser is located - then you only need to switch how that Phaser is activated so that it is under the control of Foot Controller 2. This would be done in your newly created Performance (at the COMMON/AUDIO level if it is a SYSTEM Effect, and at the individual PART level if it is an INSERT Effect). In order to use the Foot Controller 2 (CC4) as a SOURCE for the Phaser - you will need to use or assign the Phaser as an Insertion Effect.
(Insertion Effects, being an integral part of the instrument PART, can be assigned to be controlled by a CC# sent by a Channel Controller, like the FC2)

Hope that at least gets you started, let us know.

Extra Credit:
You can easily understand that a Wah-Wah pedal is an Insertion Effect - in the real world, only one instrumentalist uses the pedal at a time. It is a personal effect. System Effects, typically, are those that are 'shared' by all the instruments - think of the System Effects as those that recreate the room acoustics (or the environment) in which the musicians all are located (like Reverberation and Delays). There are exceptions, of course, but it helps to know how they are traditionally used so that you can proceed without stumbling around or guessing.

HINT: You will want to assign the electric piano's Phaser effect as an INSERTION EFFECT to that PART (or Parts), so that you can assign the Foot Controller 2 to be the controller that activates it. if you have trouble with this, please tell us which electric piano you are working with...

Mr Bad Mister,

You are a Baaaaaaaad Mister :). Thank you. We need more people like you in this world. Thank you for sharing such great knowledge, and thank you for taking the time to do it.

Well... I did not specify which Rhodes (although my go to seems to be the Rd73 most of the time) or which Clav because I wanted to experiment. I was thinking the "cleanest" Clav, and then add the wah and the amp... For the record, I did try to "study" the PedalWah Clavi - great sound but a little too aggressive (bright) for what I am trying to do but I was missing many concepts and did not get very far. What I will do is play around with it and get back with you on the specifics.

Your explanation was excellent and I think (this time finally) I started to understand how the Insertion and System effects work in the MODX. So many possibilities.

Mr. Bad Mister, as always, it was a pleasure hearing from you.

Eduardo

For the wah effect ...

I would consider using the "Multi FX" effect under the distortion category. This single effect has a compressor, wah (auto OR modulated by a controller such as a pedal), distortion with lots of options, speaker simulation (vintage Fender, metal, etc), phaser, and delay (including echo, flanger, chorus). Each (compression, wah, distortion, speaker sim, phaser and delay) can be switched on/off.

Choice of system or insertion is your preference. I would probably stick with insertion given this effect covers so many bases there may not be a need to bus the effect using system level effects.

Thank you Jason! Will check out that "Multi FX" for sure! I really appreciate your time and input as well!
Have a great day!
