What is a compatible external storage drive to use with my Motif XF8, and how many GB or TB should it be?

Compatible USB list

They should be GB in size. 4, 8, 16, 32GB are fine.

Thank you for the feedback, but, I believe I was trying to ask about a hard disk drive storage device like the one pictured in the reference manual on p.40. I connected a Western Digital for Mac hard disk drive to my Motif and went to format it through following the instruction in my reference manual on p.240, however, I got a Disk or memory read/write error

Less than 32GB?
If not, try formatting it on your computer... also partition it into 32GB regions using FAT32 or similar format. (Do Not use NTFS or HFS+ formatting).
You likely have a drive that’s toooooo biggggg - the synth probably doesn’t like looking at that much empty space.

It is recommended to get smaller drives not only for convenience, but safety. Having several smaller USB thumb drives, that you regularly backup to your computer, is better than having one drive that is huge. The problems with one huge drive (beyond the instrument having issues recognizing it) If it fails, or when it fails (is more correct), all your data goes.

Recommendation: For day to day use, which is what you'll likely need, a bunch of smaller thumb drives works much better.
Connect that terabyte drive to your computer and drag your music stuff to it as your backup safety... get smaller thumb drives for practical day-to-day use with the instrument.

Oh okay, that sounds more reasonable, thank you.
