Dynamic range for piano sounds

I've got a MOXF6 which I am controlling with MIDI, from a CLP-430 Clavinova connected to the MOXF6's MIDI input.

I've found that with the piano sounds, the dynamic responsiveness of the MOXF6 isn't as wide as that of the CLP-430 itself. In particular, if I try to play piano/pianissimo, the MOXF6 is louder than I'd like. It feels as though the MOXF6 has an audio compressor running which is making the quiet parts louder, or else there is some sort of MIDI mapping which is making the quiet inputs louder.

What might be going on to do this? What could I change to get a more responsive dynamic range of quiet to loud playing?

Stupid question - but have you ruled out that the CLP-430 isn't *sending* a reduced range? If the MOXF is expecting 0-127, but the CLP is only sending 40-127, there's not much the MOXF can do about it on its own.

Possible fix? Cheat. 😉 Most of the MOXF voices are made up of like 5-7 elements, each set to only respond to a given velocity range - so you'll have Piano Element 1 set for 0-20, Element 2 for 21-40, and so on - 41-60, 61-80, 80-105, and 106-127 (or whatever, I can't be bothered to go into the other room and check 😉 So experiment a bit, remap the elements to be (for instance 30-45, 46-60, 61-75, 76-90, 91-105, and 106-127. Of course, experimentation will probably be needed to find the exact mapping needed.
