I see that XG Works software is available for free on some websites. Is this download legal? Thank you for your help.

I would check out who is offering it and if they are supporting it. Sounds very strange. XGWorks by Yamaha was discontinued almost 2 decades ago. It initially ran on Windows 95, 2000, and maybe even up to Windows XP (with hardware upgrades).
If you can find it on an official Yamaha site (www.yamaha.com) for your part of the world - let us know. I am not a lawyer so the legality of it is something I don't know. What I do know is that is a long discontinued product. If you have a doubt - contact the folks offering this as a download.
