First post here, been lurking for a while.

I'm returning to the world of keyboards and synths after a very long hiatus. Just bought myself a MOXF8 that will be delivered this coming week.

Today I purchased and downloaded the DCP Productions "Vintage Keys" library so that I can load these sounds into the MOXF8 user voice banks when it arrives, but I have a question relating to the "User Arpeggio" that is included.

The file is in .X4G format. Nowhere in the pdf that came with the download does it mention how to load it or - just as importantly - where it gets loaded to on the MOXF8! It only mentions loading the .X6A file (for the 128 voices but not the user arpeggio). I can't find any mention of user arpeggios in the MOXF8 manual either.

Anyone here able to point me in the right direction?

Please see pages 156-157 of the MOXF Reference Manual. It talks about the FILE TYPES that are compatible with your MOXF8. You can load the ALL ARP (.X4G) of the MOX-series, as well as the .X3G of the Motif XF-series, in addition to the .X6G of the MOXF-series own data.

You can download the PDF Reference Manual from the OFFICIAL YAMAHA DOWNLOAD site: http://download.yamaha.com
Select your country
Type in the MODEL NAME: MOXF8
When the SEARCH RESULTS appear verify: MOXF8
Here you will find all the updater (firmware), Software, Manuals, Content Data, etc. for the MOXF8

The Reference Manual is the parameter-by-parameter manual for the instrument.
The Data List Booklet and Synthesizer Parameter Manual are also in PDF.
The instrument comes with a paper version of the Owner's Manual (but you can get it in PDF as well).

Thanks Bad Mister. I already had all the docs downloaded 🙂

However, I'm still not clear about what happens when you load an arpeggio.

The owner's manual for the MOXF8 states - in the specifications - that there are 256 user arpeggios but there's not a great deal of detail, either in the owners manual or the reference manual.

Are these user arpeggio slots empty like the user voices? Or pre-populated like the user performances? I'm guessing the former as I can find nothing in any of the docs that suggests the user arpeggios are pre-populated.

Do you know?

The 256 USER Arpeggio locations are empty when you first encounter them. You can create new ARPEGGIOS using the SONG or PATTERN sequencer. There is a JOB called PUT TRACK TO ARPEGGIO. You are correct there is not a whole lot of information but there is some:

Please see the ARPEGGIO BLOCK (Reference Manual pages 11 through 16) For the basic fundamentals
Please see the ARPEGGIO EDIT section (Reference Manual 27-29) for navigating the ARP EDIT parameters
Please CREATING AN ARPEGGIO (Reference Manual pages 125 and 126)

We also have prepared several articles here on Yamaha Synth to help get a grasp of arpeggios:

Key Modes Explained

Arpeggios Explored

The 4 Track Arpeggio

Velocity Zoned Arpeggios

Recording Sort+Direct Velocity Zoned Arpeggios

That's great Bad Mister, thank you! So when I go to load the .X4G file from the Vintage Keys library, I will navigate to an empty Arpeggio location to put it on the synth.

I'll check out the links and dig a bit more into the reference manual too.

Thanks again 😀

I've downloaded and installed the John Melas Total Librarian program as I read about it on the "Frankenstein S700 Piano" thread.

This looks very cool indeed and well worth 35 Euros if I decide to buy it.

One thing that I did notice, there are no User Arpeggio locations in the application.

That being the case, am I right in saying that if I create a library in the Total Librarian program to import into the MOXF8, I'm going to have to load the 'user arpeggio' .X4G separately?

Yes that is true. However, the Melas software deals with the compilation of Arpeggios in the Waveform Editor (also very useful in making and organizing your data, particularly if you have a Flash Board!)

OK, so it seems to get the full flexibility of data management, I need the Waveform Editor! I have been playing around with the Total Librarian, and I like it. I'll have to try out the Waveform Editor.

In this specific case, we're looking at one .X4G file from the DCP "Vintage Keys" set - I'm not looking to edit sounds, I'd rather leave that to the expert programmers out there!

I did find with the Total Librarian I was having to create multiple libraries before creating a 'master' one....as I was pulling in files from several places (Vintage Keys, CP1, Inspiration In A Flash etc...)

I'll have a tryout of the Waveform Editor and see how that goes.

Thanks again Bad Mister!

So...I have had a play with the John Melas Waveform Editor.....it appears to be much more suited to editing waveforms (hence the name I guess) as opposed to the organisation of already-programmed sounds, which the Total Librarian does pretty well....certainly easier than trying to do it 'onboard' the MOXF8!

BM - not sure if you know as its not a Yamaha product. I have used Melas Librarian on my XF for years to quickly manage Performances for live gigs. I bought a moXF6 for travel gigs. I just completed scrubbing all of my XF legacy data and cleaned out all the unused waveforms (long overdue - I know, you've lectured us for years and of course you're right). I created a clean new XF file (needed Voices in User 1-3, Perfs in User 1-2, reformatted Flash and reloaded ... and saved a new slimmed down clean X03 file.

I loaded this into my moXF ... so far no problem (other than I only have 61 keys now - lol). All of my custom Voices and Performances are now in my XF and moXF! WOOT!

I found one Perf bank was off by one position (an Initialized performance sitting in slot User 1-B1 arrgh). tried to connect my moXF to Melas librarian - and to my surprise my laptop can't "find" my board on USB. I connect fine to my XF.still. Any idea why?

is there a different USB driver for moXF vs XF?
does Melas Librarian not connect to moXF?

other?

appreciate any insights or pearls of wisdom ... thanks

Indeed there is, very different.

http://download.yamaha.com

The MOXF uses the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver, which a completely different driver from the Motif XF.
