Cubase Pro 8.5.20 Update -- Beware!

Last night I got into Cubase Pro 8.5.15 to do some work on a song. Up came the Hub with a notice that an 8.5.20 update was available.

Having had good experiences with previous Cubase updates, I went ahead and did it. BIG mistake. The install failed with an error message about not being able to find an installation package (see attached image). Things were looking bad.

I opened up Cubase, and it still said version 8.5.15. I started working with my project, but various tracks were not able to receive MIDI input from my Montage. I tried all sorts of things and nothing worked. Finally, with nothing else to try, I uninstalled and reinstalled the Montage USB driver. That fixed the problem.

So it seems that the 8.5.20 update, in addition to not working properly, also manages somehow to destroy the connection between the Montage driver and Cubase.

Steinberg wasted an hour and a half of my time with this defective update. I'd advise you all to stay away from it. In the future, unless I really need some particular feature of a Cubase update, I'm going to wait a few weeks after they're available before installing them.

Ouch! That's sounds very unpleasant. Just to add balance, I just upgraded from 8.5.0 to 8.5.20 on MacOS 10.11.5 without any issues. Perhaps an issue with the Windows installer only?

Or just with your computer. In either case, please contact Steinberg through your MySteinberg account, the issue is between your software, Cubase, and your computer. Let them know you had an issue, they may have a solution or fix already.

To anyone reading this - if you have an issue with updating your Steinberg software, the proper place to report this is directly to Steinberg via your MySteinberg Account. Often it is not an issue at all, sometimes it very much is, either way reporting it is right thing to do for everyone involved. Then please report back what you discover. It might be a major issue or it might just be your system.

Nothing to beware of. The update works fine.

Download the update again, and re-install.

Reboot your computer.

Done.

I already did it yesterday. Will update here when I hear back from Steinberg.

I know it could just be a problem on my computer, but the fact that the installer couldn't find one of its own files looks more to me like a bug in the installer.

Had already tried this before I posted. Same problem occurred. Would have been nice if it worked, but it didn't.

I'm not the only one who has run into this.

I checked the link. Apparently an issue with the Windows updater. (I'm on Mac, so did not experience this).

I assume you've reinstalled 8.5.15 until this gets sorted.

I agree though that when updates don't go smoothly, it's frustrating and a time consuming.

I should've mentioned it was Windows 10, on a Surface 3 tablet.

What I've ended up with is a hybrid -- all other components of the install succeeded, but Cubase itself is still at 8.5.15. It seems to be working now, but the non-standard (and untested) configuration worries me.

Out there on the bleeding edge there is likely to be blood. πŸ™‚

Tablets are not quite computers, I know they want to be, but you will have to stay on top of things when you are not using the mainstream device. I would anticipate tablets being the place where if there are issues they're likely to be where your at... But then I've not felt the need to record to a tablet just yet.

A Surface 3 tablet is really just a PC with a touchscreen put together in a small package. There's nothing particularly non-standard about it, especially since it's made by Microsoft -- the same company that makes Windows. I would expect there to be far fewer hardware-related problems with a device like this than with a PC/laptop made by some other company.

Plus, it's small and light enough to hang in a very ergonomically appropriate position above my Montage (it's the screen on the right).

I was really trying to stay away from the bleeding edge by choosing this machine. But perhaps that didn't work out. I guess we'll see what Steinberg tech support comes up with…

I heard back from Steinberg tech support today. Here's what they said:

There may have been an issue with accessing the update through the Steinberg Hub.

My recommendation is to uninstall and reinstall Cubase Pro 8.5 and then apply the latest 8.5.20 update:

http://www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=12494&L=1

I did it, and now I'm updated to 8.5.20 and everything's OK. But it leaves me wondering whether there's some problem using the Steinberg Hub for updates, or whether the 8.5.20 update doesn't work if you're already updated to 8.5.15. I asked, and will post any answers here.
