Blue Flag?

I turn on my Montage and tap on a performance in the live set that appears. The performance immediately has a blue flag next to its name, supposedly indicating that it has been changed.

How can this be? I just turned the machine on. I didn’t change anything!

Could it have something to do with the fact that the performance is linked to a pattern?

I turn on my Montage and tap on a performance in the live set that appears. The performance immediately has a blue flag next to its name, supposedly indicating that it has been changed.

As you state, the blue flag appears (by the Performance Name) when a setting has been altered from the *stored* status. However, there is no blue flag icon (ever, as far as I know) on the LIVE SET screen.

Perhaps you have changed something.
Likely your Performance, when recalled from the HOME screen has a particular *stored* Volume, and you have changed that stored value by using the LIVE SET’s ability to associate a different (offset) Volume for that Performance.

We are certain you mean that when the Live Set is used to recall the Performance, and then you either go to the Pattern Seq screen or the Performance’s HOME screen (the only places the blue flag can appear) you notice the blue flag already appears.

This indicates that LIVE SET has applied an offset to Volume.

How to know:
Go to the Performance’s HOME screen
Increment to the next Performance, then immediately return to your Performance (thus recalling all *stored* values - the blue flag will not appear)
Check the Performance Common Volume:
Press [EDIT] > “General”

If this is different than the Volume setting you edited to the Live Set, you’ve found your culprit. Recalling the Performance via the LIVE SET screen you are editing (changing) the stored Volume.

Hope that helps.

Extra Credit:
If you think of the Performance as a band (the instruments in a band), you might have a “Jazz Quartet” Performance... piano, vibraphone, bass and drums... (Modern Jazz Quartet). This one band (Performance) may be used in 25 Songs and/or Pattern Sequences... same Performance...

When using the Sequencer you make the LIVE SET link... for each of the 25 musical compositions...they all can use this same Performance (a band can be used for scores of tunes)... then in the Live Set you can set the Volume differently for each linked composition. You might set it to 127 for “‘Round Midnight” and 116 for “Bag’s Groove” etc.,... same Performance, different Live Set Volumes per composition.

You don’t need to create and store 25 different separate Performances... you can have just one for all your MJQ tunes.

Make sense? Hope that helps.

Thanks, Bad Mister.

You are correct that if I increment away from the performance and then decrement back to it, the blue flag goes away. But it’s not the volume. The volume is the same both before and after the increment/decrement.

If I turn on the Montage and immediately do a category search for the performance, I also do not get the blue flag.

I’ve posted Montage screenshots both of the live set slot settings and the performance volume. Is there some other parameter that the live set slot could be setting?

Tempo.
The Tempo stored in your Performance reads 92 bpm but the Live Set is recalling a Pattern Tempo set to 121 bpm.
That’s a change... you linked the Pattern to the Live Set but that Pattern Tempo is different from the Performance Tempo...

The Pattern Sequence’s Tempo is written to the Pattern, not the Performance. Since your Pattern is 121 bpm, go back to your Performance HOME screen, change the Tempo from 92 to 121, then STORE the Performance. If the Live Set is recalling the Pattern and the Pattern is stored at Tempo 121... that Pattern is linked to a Performance that when recalled alone is stored at a Tempo of 92... it’s the Pattern Tempo that will rule. Recalling the Live Set > Pattern (121) > Performance.

FYI: each Performance has the ability to have a stored tempo __ for use with Arpeggios, Motion Sequences, Tempo Driven Effects, Tempo Sync’d LFOs, all clocked items. Even if you are not using any of those things in the particular Performance, it will store a Tempo reference.

Back to the ModernJazzQuartet, example, four Part Jazz Quartet Performance — that one Performance can have a dozen or more compositions (sequences) that use it... each sequence will have its own Tempo... even though the original Performance’s Tempo is whatever, the tempo of the Sequence determines the tempo of play.

Your LIVE SET is recalling the Pattern Seq, not the Performance. So the blue flag is signifying that the Tempo of the Pattern is a change from the Tempo of the Performance if the Performance is recalled alone.

Extra Credit:
When linking programs to a LIVE SET it is good to remember that:
__ you can have the Live Set slot recall the Performance on its Home screen - the Tempo will be as stored in the Performance
__ you can have the Live Set slot recall a MIDI Song or Pattern Sequence... each Sequence can be linked to a Performance on the Sequencer page - the Tempo will be as stored in the Sequence.
_ when you recall a Pattern Sequence, you can have it so you start it manually with the [PLAY] button; or you could have it set for “Key On Start” = On._ additionally, the Pattern Sequence can be set to “Chain” - this way the entire Scene change automation can take place. If Chain is not active, you can manually change Scenes, using the dedicated [SCENE] 1-8 buttons.

When linking the current status to the Live Set, it can be done intuitively: set it the way you wish to have it when you execute the [SHIFT] + [LIVE SET] routine to register it to a slot. If/When you make changes to a slot you can simply overwrite the previous state by targeting the original LIVE SET slot.

Important Note: As long as you don’t change the Pattern Sequence screen for a particular Pattern, the Live Set will recall the Pattern with your preferred settings. If you do make changes remember to update the Live Set slot by overwriting the current slot!

Very cool. Thanks for that explanation.

It’s lucky that I posted two screenshots. They had the information that could have allowed me to figure it out for myself, but I don’t think that would ever have happened. So it’s good that we have you to answer our questions.

And it’s always welcome to see the MJQ, one of my favorite bands, get mentioned.
