Hello - I know this has been discussed before, but without relevant resolution! I am in the process of negotiating for a Genos to team with my Montage 7, and I would appreciate a little encouragement regarding the speaker system. I currently employ a pair of active Alesis M1 speakers which I'm used to, and can tweak things a little to compensate for their shortcomings. However. I am thinking of including a pair of Yamaha HS7s in the deal, and wonder if I will notice the difference? I am hoping for better separation of instruments, and better clarity in rendition. I do not expect the sort of result I may get if I spend large sums of money (which is all going into buying the Genos anyway), but can I expect to be happy with the results I'll get with the HS7s? I must add that my hearing is far from top notch, with a 30% loss at both ends of the spectrum, so I m unable to distinguish fine detail, which makes top end speakers a waste of money. Thank you ... !

Hello Chris - I've been doing that, thank you, and the HS7s have the edge over most of the others (in comparable price brackets), but you cannot get a definite answer because it's so personal. I've hit the same set of buffers as I hit last time - I don't actually want a flat response because it doesn't matter to me - I'm not commercial in any sense and my hearing's shot anyway! So I've landed in the same dilemma - HS7s - or KRK G3 Rokit 6s? I'm leaning more to the Rokits because they tend to emphasise the bass slightly, which is what I want. My 'Musicube' is too small for bigger speakers, and I don't want the bulk of a sub-woofer.

Hello Tho - one of the comparison reviews I listened to included the Presonus ones you mentioned compared to the HS8s, and whereas the reviewer did not say as much, it was clear that he preferred the Yamahas. As he said, the final choice is personal - but there's no way I can get to listen to any of them, so I have to go by the weight of evidence!

Thanks Rod & Bad Mister !

Yamaha HS8 is definitely a high quality sounds of the Monitor, I was looking for it but the Price a little high that I can't afford at a moment. Maybe I have to wait a while when my wife turn on the green light then

Thanks

HS7 is cheaper. Used is cheaper. A popular music box store has a pair of HS7s for under $400. This is how I got my pair of HS7s. You have a liberal return policy.

Same store, $80 more gets you a used pair of HS8s.

Hello Tho - I know the feeling! Yamaha are not noted for under-pricing! The HS7s are considerably cheaper (€198 rather than €258 hereabouts) and are perfectly adequate unless you have a large music room (ie: more than about 144 sq:ft:). Both HS7 and HS8 are near-field, remember, so you need to be sitting fairly close (ie: within 6'). Having slept on it, I'm settling for the Rokit 6s (which have the added attraction of a lower price tag at €179) because of the bass emphasis which suits me and my musicube (64 sq:ft:!).

Thanks all for the advise!

Jason: You mentioned "A popular music box store has a pair of HS7s for under $400" Can you provide me the website or link?

Thanks

Used equipment is in flux. GC is where I purchased my used HS7s and has an easy-to-search used section. Used gear from any location can be shipped to any other location (with a fee - fairly modest).

I don't really like advertising 3rd party stuff and was hoping you would search for used gear and could be made aware of which popular stores (online/brick-mortar) sell used stuff through searching.

Decided on KRK G3 Rokit 6s, and ordered a pair this morning. I'll report back with actual results in due course.

Did you happen to listen to the several demos of the Rokit vs. the JBL vs. the Yamaha speakers on YouTube...?

The Rokit's came in last in every instance...

And I know demoing speakers on YouTube is not the perfect thing to do - but all of the speakers are on the same (bad sounding) level playing field..so...

Just a thought! πŸ™‚

??? You can’t analyze speakers on YouTube. You know the absurdity of it, yet you persist, anyway!

You are going to pour vinegar into several different glasses of fine wine you are comparing, and state, β€œwell, they each have to deal with the same amount of vinegar.” C’mon man!
Why not just take your money and burn it... it will make a more interesting sound πŸ™‚

LOL - no one is saying that you use YouTube as a purchasing decision... πŸ™‚

It is but just another tool - and a lot of times not all speakers are available in the same location to do a side-by-side comparison, etc.

I would hope that no one would just buy a speaker after just hearing what it sounds like on YouTube!

Hello G - no, I didn't see that video, but as BM says it couldn't be relied on for a decision, I'm working on personal preference for emphasised lower end (which was remarked on a few times) but with the capacity to emphasise it more or de-emphasise it. High end too, so I can twiddle them to suit my small 8' cube of a room - so 146w total output (from 4 amplifiers) is plenty. And 38Hz is lower than I can hear, while 35kHz is way past what anyone can hear. They are at least as well made as either Yamaha or JBL, and offer near ideal dimensions for the available space. One video compared them directly with a pair of entry-level Samson Media Ones, on a par with my Alesis M1s, and I liked what I heard that time. For example, when I mix a violin with a cello, on my M1s I hear a pleasant string sound - just as on the Samsons. But even on the video I heard a violin and a cello in concert with the Rokits. Similarly elsewhere - mostly expressed opinion rather than actual sounds. The weight of evidence favoured the Rokits for my particular preferences. From what I have seen I'd rate them as Rokit, JBL, HS7 (in my price range!). Thomann's confirmed dispatch this afternoon, so maybe tomorrow I'll find out the truth ...

Hello - haven't forgotten this - I ordered a pair of KRK G3 Rokit 6s last Monday morning, but it seems that UPS have swapped out their van fleet for boys on bicycles, so they won't arrive until next Monday late afternoon ... in the meantime I have pulled my musicube apart and re-positioned everything, paying particular attention to where the speakers are placed. There is a marked difference in the quality of sound in that I am now in the 'sweet spot' - the positioning does matter, which I didn't really believe before.

I'm afraid that my original plan to buy a Genos to team up with my Montage7 has bitten the dust. The price is simply too high, and negotiations stalled on the cost of returning my Tyros 3 in part exchange. So said Tyros 3 is now integrated with the Montage and my Korg M3 via MIDI. Limitless possibilities, only needing the better speakers to appreciate the results more.
