Hello, I am trying to access files on my iMac from the Motif XF via Ethernet connection through the router. I need some hints on what may be the cause of the problem I am experiencing. This is the situation:

1. The Ethernet connection works when connecting from the iMac to the Motif (using the File Server Account name and password) and I can transfer files between the iMac and the USB memory stick in the Motif.

2. However, the other way - connecting from the Motif to the iMac - does not work. Being in the command FILE-MOUNT on the Motif and typing in the iMac computer name, the computer seems to be recognized from the Motif and the iMac User Name shows up. When I input the Password for the iMac account - followed by ENTER - I get the message "Can't access to the host."

I believe I have studied everything I can find here on YamahaSynth, on Motifator and elsewhere on the internet, in the Reference and Owner’s Manual and have double-checked that I am doing what I am supposed to do several times (for example: turned off wi-fi on iMac, enabled file sharing in iMac, activated SMB, tried different Ethernet cables). However, there must be some - probably simple issue - I am overlooking.

This is the system:
1. iMac Early 2009 model running Yosemite (OS X 10.10.5) (latest OS for iMac)
2. Motif XF Firmware 1.50.4

Any hints and help are highly appreciated.

Best regards
Peter

Excellent. The Motif XF allows you to communicate from your computer to the XF's connected devices. It's the computer that is not allowing an external device into the "shared" device of its Network.

The fact that your computer does not allow an external device to access it, is most likely a setting or result of a setting in your computer. I have been in your situation, and although I have gotten it to work on several occasions, it was only after I had all but given up and returned after a coffee break to find that after being left alone for a long period of time my MacBook Pro finally allowed my Motif XF to access the host and I was able to see the Shared Folders in my XF's screen.

Frankly, I have not even attempted this with Yosemite, as with each update after Lion, it seemed to get more and more squirrelly on the Mac side. Since mostly what I used the connection for was for archiving ...making long term backup files (I'd just copy them from the USB stick connected to the XF directly to the shared folder)

I wish I could tell you how to speed the Mac's acceptance of the Motif XF within its Network but I have yet to find a Mac person who knows how to speed this process up, or even come up with a consistent work routine. For all the effort it took me to connect, I decided many Mac versions ago, it is was not really worth all the effort to set it up. It seems that the SMB (Windows) protocol does not receive much love in Mac world.

I will renew my inquiries to see where this currently stands. I will report what I find out.

Thank you very much for your reply. I agree that the benefit of the connection from Motif to iMac is marginal when the connection the other way works, however once you get started on a problem like this a certain persistence sets in and it becomes a challenge - and a satisfaction in itself - to get it solved. However, numerous coffee breaks have not helped so far πŸ™‚ I will let you know if I find the trick.
