Hello.

I need a little clarification as to how and when controller values are set when a given voice or multi is loaded. Let me explain...

In Voice Mode, I have a copy of Full Concert Grand in User 1. The Controller Assignments are mapped so that Foot Control 1 adjusts the Reverb Send and Foot Control 2 adjusts the Chorus Send. Depth for both are set to +31. For now, it's really that simple.

My problem is that regardless of how my MIDI Controller is set, when the voice is loaded from memory, both the reverb and chorus sound like they are set half way (64), so the sound automatically has reverb and chorus applied until I adjust the corresponding sliders on my MIDI controller. Please note that I CAN use the sliders to set both Chorus and Reverb Send to Zero by moving the corresponding sliders up then down.

Please understand that I do realize that the graphs for Foot Control 1 and 2 specifically show the lines going from 64 to 127 (half to max), and I also see that the graphs for Assign 1 and 2 go from 0 - 127, so it would seem that this is elementary, but then why would I be able to set it the way I want it (at zero) manually, but not have that become the default setting when the sound is loaded to memory?

I would prefer to not have to manually adjust my sliders each time I load a voice. Is there something I'm missing?

By the way, I have tried re-saving (storing) the sounds after making the adjustments, but it always comes back to this default state.

I did also try adjusting the Controller Reset value from "hold" to "reset" but I'm not sure if I understand the difference and what to expect from each of these settings.

I'll be happy to supply any additional info as needed. This would be a nice one to solve.

Here's what I think is tripping me up:

Each of the Controller Assigns have specific properties. This includes the range (0-127 or 64-127) and the default value.

Mod Wheel, Pitch Wheel and Ribbon have a range of 0-127 but their default value is 64.

Assigns 1 and 2 are the only ones with a range of 0-127 with a default value of 0.

If the slider on my MIDI controller is programmed to go from 0-127 on any controller with a range of 64-127, it will essentially go negative, which explains why I can only manually bring the volume down on the voices assigned to Foot Controller 1 and 2.

So if I want to control volume, chorus send and reverb send, the best I can do is to use Assigns 1 and 2 for the Chorus/Reverb Sends and Ribbon or Mod Wheel for the voice's volume. However, I still have to manually bring down the volume for voices in a MULTI which should not sound by default.

I am now focusing on getting a flexible MULTI setup with eight (8) pairs of voices. Each pair consists of a piano/keys voice and a PAD which goes well with that voice. Furthermore, each pair is assigned to a MIDI channel so the first pair is MIDI channel 1, and the last pair is MIDI channel 8. On my MIDI controller I can program buttons to instantly recall up to ten memory locations and these have their primary MIDI channel set from 1-8 respectively.

With the controller assignment changes described above, this works well to keep reverb and chorus defaulting to zero, but the volume for my PADs still default to 64, so to prepare for my performance, I have to rifle through the 8 MIDI channels and manually move the slider up and down to zero it out. Then as long as I stay on that MULTI, it makes for a nice setup.

Obviously, if anyone has any ideas how to get any of the controller assigns other than Assign 1/2 to default to zero, that would be AWESOME.

I’ve read your posts and I’m lost... I think you are making this more complicated than it should be. If you can help me understand what you are doing.

What C.C. number are you sending in with Foot Controller 1?
What C.C. number are you sending in with Foot Controller 2

I can not determine if you have two Foot Pedals... because you can’t plug Foot Controllers into the Rack XS... so I’m not clear on what you mean by the above sentence. Please clarify.

No problem, BM. I will try to clarify...

On the Motif Rack XS:

Assign 1 is set to CC 21
Assign 2 is set to CC 22
Ribbon is set to CC 23
Breath Controller is set to CC 24
Foot Controller 1 is set to CC 25
Foot Controller 2 is set to CC 26
Foot Switch is set to CC 27
Asn Func 1 is set to CC 28
Asn Func 2 is set to CC 29

On the MIDI Controller:

Slider 1 is set to CC 21 with a range of 0-127
Slider 2 is set to CC 22 with a range of 0-127
Slider 3 is set to CC 23 with a range of 0-127
Slider 4 is set to CC 24 with a range of 0-127
Slider 5 is set to CC 25 with a range of 0-127
Slider 6 is set to CC 26 with a range of 0-127
Slider 7 is set to CC 27 with a range of 0-127
Slider 8 is set to CC 28 with a range of 0-127
Slider 9 is set to CC 29 with a range of 0-127

Other than the Sustain Pedal there are no external controllers plugged in anywhere. CC values are set entirely via the on-board Sliders 1-9.

That being said, my CURRENT CONFIGURATION does not use the Foot Controllers. I have found that Assign 1 and Assign 2 work flawlessly with Reverb and Chorus Send. I no longer have to move those sliders when loading any Voice or MULTI which uses those controls and functions.

For MULTI's, since Ribbon is the only other Controller Assignment which supports values of 0-127, I have the 2nd voice (PAD) set to use Ribbon for Volume. So now I only have to adjust Slider 3 up then down to zero out the volume for my PAD.

Therefore, the only question I need answered is how can I change the default value for Ribbon (or any controller assignment for that matter) to Zero? At this point, I believe the answer may be that Assign 1 and 2 have a fixed default of zero, and all other controllers have a fixed default of 64.

Admittedly, this is not a typical implementation, and attempts several "tricks" to get it to behave like MainStage 3. But I also see that my current configuration is entirely usable, and provides enormous flexibility for live performance in a church environment. I successfully used it last weekend, and fully intend to continue to use my Motif Rack XS over MainStage 3 for a long time to come.

I am committed to creating a series of helpful YouTube videos explaining how all of this is done, so that other performers may benefit as well in 2017.

In your first post you say, “In Voice Mode, I have a copy of Full Concert Grand in User 1. The Controller Assignments are mapped so that Foot Control 1 adjusts the Reverb Send and Foot Control 2 adjusts the Chorus Send. Depth for both are set to +31. For now, it's really that simple.”

Now you say,
“Foot Controller 1 is set to CC 25
Foot Controller 2 is set to CC 26”

How is Foot Controller 1 adjusting Reverb Send? Reverb Send is cc91?

I’m confused.

My goodness, what a moving target I've created!

The fact of the matter is that everything is subject to change because I continue to work on the problem on my own.

I do try to keep you up-to-date with these changes, but clearly I'm not doing a very good job of it!

I suppose that I could try again, but the truth is that I've already solved this on my own, and have moved on.

At the end of day, what really matters is that as a Yamaha Motif owner, I am seriously happy and enjoying my Rack XS immensely!

Please go ahead and close out this thread, and don't let my ramblings get to your head!
