So about saving, sometimes I only want to export/import one performance or two and not deal with whole libraries. It all seems overly complicated?

Synario: I have a montage at home and create a sound I like and want to load it on one of my touring rigs for the next show with drastically different memories (Montage 7/8) or share a sound on stage for both my keyboards lets say. Well, I can't seem to find an easy solution for this. I'm I completely overlooking something simple like a MIDI dump or something?

Thanks in advance! I'm used to the Motifs where you load a backup in and can peek in there and pull out what ya need to.

If the Performance uses no custom waveforms, you can use Montage Connect to export an X7B - but you can't load an X7B straight from the instrument. You need Montage Connect to land it back on another Montage.

If you want to jump through even more hoops - and IF you feel OK with sharing your work with a cloud service - then you can upload your songs to Soundmondo. Then, assuming the other Montage 7/8 is connected to an internet-connected computer - then you can use Soundmondo to transfer the sound to that keyboard also.

It'd be great if future firmware would allow exporting an X7B direct to USB and import an X7B from a USB stick. Or even be able to job import/export to/from multiple X7B files.

I do think the sort of thing that can be done between Libraries and User (Library Import - as in Library Bank Import) would be nice to have as a User-File/Library-File Import where one can check one or more Performances inside a Library or User file to import to the user area without overwriting any existing User Performances. That doesn't exist - so you have to go through the current drill. Possibly save your current user area and initialize the user area, then load content to the Library area, then import what you want to the user area, then save that off as a new Library/User file to bring over to the other keyboard.

Hi Mark,
It’s not complicated at all, once you understand the tools. You have a couple of options to Store/Save individual Performances. And shuttling Performance Data between home rig and your touring rig could not be easier. The glass is half-full version below...

Option 1: Computer Utility — “MONTAGE CONNECT”
This computer utility can run as a stand-alone program or as a VST/AU plug-in in any compatible DAW (Convenient for storing the one Performance that would accompany each DAW Project). Mac or Windows PC compatible. As a stand-alone you can keep each Performance you make as a separate “bulk” file. MONTAGE CONNECT uses the USB connection to request a MIDI bulk dump from the current MONTAGE Edit Buffer. And it can capture and return your Performance to that Edit Buffer. It will work for all your Performances, whether or not they have custom Waveforms, as long as you know how the management of your Waveform data is handled.

MONTAGE CONNECT captures all Performance settings, including which Waveform location is being referenced. This means if you have created or are using a Waveform that is in your User area, then as long as the data remains in its User location your MONTAGE CONNECT file will restore your Performance. This is easy enough to manage on your computer. You can create your own Folder hierarchy to organize your .X7B Files.

In actual use, when you’re using custom USER WAVEFORMS, you’ll want to work through to the point where you can ensure that the custom Waveforms are where they need to be in both your instruments (home and touring rig). This is when most MONTAGE users find MONTAGE CONNECT the perfect solution. Because all the Preset Waveforms and all your Library installed Waveforms have a permanent location within your instrument’s Waveform List. Therefore, your data created at home will be able to be bulked to any other MONTAGE6/7/8. Your .X7B Files will be 100% compatible with both your MONTAGEs. This makes an ideal way to store/save your own data.

If you’ve created new Waveform in your Home rig and it’s in the User Waveform Bank (Not yet placed in a ROM Library), you’ll simply need to ‘synchronize’ your MONTAGEs USER BANK — as long as your two instruments have identical Waveform Lists, you’re cool!

Because a Performance is between 2-4KB of data, MIDI “bulk dump” makes an ideal method to Store/Save your Performance data. Of course, it does not dump the custom Waveform/Samples which can be hundreds of MegaBytes of data. Life is too short to “bulk dump” sampled audio data. This is why, MONTAGE CONNECT is ideal for personal use and will work for you once you understand how it deals with the large Waveform/Sample (Oscillator) Data. Clicking on “Load” bulks the currently selected data to the MONTAGE’s Edit Buffer where you can play it, Edit it, store it to your internal User Bank.

Simply keep identical Waveform Lists in both of your instruments and you’ll have no issues! See “In Use” below...

Option 2: iOS device utility — Soundmondo
Soundmondo is an App that runs on an iPhone/iPad and uses bulk dump requests to “capture” the current data in the MONTAGE Edit Buffer. It allows you to store each custom Performance on your iOS device as an easily accessible icon and you can restore your data to your MONTAGE quickly with a single touch. What this means is, each individual Performance will be stored as a chicklet icon... they can be organized into SET LISTS (easily reconfigured — simply drag n drop them into the order you want). Tapping a Performance icon bulks the data to the MONTAGE’s Edit Buffer where you can play it, Edit it, store it to your internal User Bank. Transfer time — less than a second.

Soundmondo (as anyone who actually uses it knows) does not have to be shared with the world, that’s your choice. If you have created a Performance you wish to contribute to the greater community of MONTAGE Users, you can choose to post your work to the Cloud... you can even include a SoundCloud link or YouTube video link showing everyone what you’ve done. But that’s your choice. Most users just use the Soundmondo App as their personal method to quickly store/save and organize their own work — particularly when they need to work with individual Performances.

The only confusing part is management of custom Waveform data... if you think about it.... All this means is that in order for the bulk dump method (used in the above two options) to work, you need to be mindful of the location of the source Waveform (Oscillator) data.

In Use
In your situation... you would create a BACKUP FILE (.X7A) that both of your instruments would share... by keeping the identical data in both instruments you’re keeping the same Waveform Lists in both units — this will totally remove any confusion. You will be able to carry around each of your Performances as individual bulkable icons on your iPhone/iPad ... with a simple USB cable and Lightning-USB-Camera-Adapter you’ll be able to move your individual Performances back and forth between your instruments.

Because your MONTAGEs will be clones of each other, you can carry your Performances with you on your phone. You can create Set Lists while traveling to the gig by simply dragging the icons into your customized listing. Create multiple sets... to recall a Performance is as simple as touching the icon — poof! The Performance is loaded.

Extra Credit:
For the record: Soundmondo on an iOS device can be used separately from the sharing function.
On stage: place your iPhone in Airplane mode...if using it Live. Or transfer items to the instrument by bulking then storing each to the internal (if you’d rather not use the iOS device on stage.
