UPGRADING WITH PLG100
A whole new synth or effects processor for under 200 dollars... tell me more!
The whole concept with the SW1000XG is that the card is not a static product - it is constantly updateable either with new divers, flash ROM updates to its operating system, but most importantly of all, with PLG!

What is PLG?
PLG is a connector that is featuring more and more on Yamaha products. From the MU100R and the all new MU128 right through to your SW1000XG. It is a common standard for digital interfacing between the named units, and a plethora of new daughterboards.
Three boards which utilise this technology have already been released, with plenty more planned over the coming months, and all of which can greatly enhance the functionality of the SW1000XG more than other systems, as the SW1000XG also acts as a multichannel mixer and hard disk recorder.
As the PLG connector has both an audio send and return path, and a MIDI communications path, it can be used in all manner of ways. The PLG100VH for example, which uses the famed DSP3 processor (found in the 6000 dollar 02R mixer), is dedicated to performing complex harmonising for audio or midi parts, so allowing you to create your own backing vocals or special effects, whilst it also adds (that's right adds!) yet another effects bus to the SW1000XG.
Unlike most upgrade cards made by other manufacturers which only give you new wave sounds using the same old synth system that is on the host unit, PLG allows you to completely change the synthesis architecture to suit your own needs.
Take for example the PLG100VL, which is a daughterboard version of our VL70m module. VL technology only a few years ago cost as much as a small family car (The VL1 cost over 7000 dollars on release, and yet now this remarkable synthesis engine which allows you to make your own instruments from scratch) is now on a 200 dollar daughterboard.
The PLG100DX gives you the true power of FM, not some half baked 4 operator toy found on most cards, but a full DX7, which is still the biggest selling synth of all time.
Yamaha have plans to release many more PLG boards in future, with various synth and effects capabilities, and for those of you concerned about being able to fit more than 1 PLG board to your SW1000XG, take heart in the fact that Yamaha have recognized this problem too... need we say more!
The SW1000XG PLG connector is technically capable of supporting way more than 1 daughterboard (as anyone who visited the NMS show in London would have seen)! So if you are waiting for the right board to come, and neglecting the incredible power of the current boards, thinking that you will only have 1 optional card... don't!
The PLG concept is what sets the SW1000XG apart from the crowd (along with the fact that it is rated as the best card ever by every mag in the UK so far), and what other system allows you to buy a whole new synth with a whole new set of features for under 200 dollars.
It's time to really start using the power of SW1000XG... with PLG!
DOES YOUR SW NEED TO BE UPDATED TO SUPPORT PLG150 CARDS?
The PLG150 series daughterboards have now been released, along with the new P-series revision of the SW1000XG. This version of the SW has a letter P (SW1000XG/P) printed clearly on the box, and on the silver backplate of the card itself. It signifies that the card is PLG150 compatible.

Users who purchase any PLG150 series card will be entitled to a free P update (involves a minor modification to a regulator on the SW1000XG card itself, adding a heatsink), and should contact the number given in their PLG150 package for support. This is the update mentioned on our PLG150AN page.
This is what a pre updated SW1000XG card looks like. Notice that the heat sink is NOT fitted to the cap left of where it says IC16. If your SW1000XG looks like this, it must be updated prior to fitting any PLG150 series card.
The revision update will only apply to people using the PLG150 series cards, and will not affect any other operational function of the SW1000XG.

Please contact your local Yamaha subsidiary when you have the PLG150AN, should you require the update.
