MU80 FAQs
(Updated 12/04/2000)

Can I use the MU50 as a MIDI interface for my PC/Mac?

Yes of course you can. All of the Yamaha MU series modules have serial to host plugs on them. This when coupled with the free serial drivers available from the Downloads Page of the Yamaha XG website, and a small low cost cable, will allow you to connect your MU50/80/10 directly to the serial COM port on your PC, and use this as an external MIDI interface. Your 'To Host' has settings for PC1 (Japanese NEC PC98), PC2 (most other makes of PC), Mac and MIDI.

A lot cheaper than having to buy a separate midi interface... wouldn't you agree?

Is there any editing software available for this?

Yes, the shareware version of the excellent XGEDIT program is available for free from the Downloads Page of the Yamaha XG website. It has many enhanced features specific to the MU80 such as access to the multi EQ section and full support for all 32 part multitimbrality, this along with lots of other free and PD stuff will help you get the best out of your MU80.

Can I process effects through the analogue input?

Yes indeed you can. The analogue inputs can have various amounts of external DSP applied to them from each of the internal effects busses. So not only are you getting a fully functional PC or Mac MIDI interface, you are also getting a 24bit resolution multi effects processor.

Why can't I use all 32 parts when I have the PC2 option selected?

You now can. Yamaha have released a serial driver which has multi channel multiport support as an option. This will allow you to use all 32 parts just from the one connection. This driver is available from the Downloads Page of the Yamaha XG website.

How is it different from the other MU modules?

The main differences are the polyphony (MU80=64, MU50=32), the analogue input, and the amount of wave ROM (MU80=8MB, MU50 = 4MB).
