MU80

Overview

compact in size, but underneath packing a massive xg punch, with 8mb of stunning wave samples, and 64 note polyphony with 2 independent midi inputs, this is the connoisseurs choice in XG devices.

With the same simple but powerful user interface as it's baby brother, the MU50, but with the added bonus of also acting as an analogue effects processor for vocals/guitar/saxophone or anything else you need to process, this is the ultimate in XG.

Main Features

  • the first and most advanced model in the yamaha XG tone generator lineup. The MU80 takes full advantage of the extensive editing capabilities of the XG format for extraordinary musical potential.

  • A huge range of top-quality preset voices are provided in 8 megabytes of wave ROM.
  • 32 parts and up to 64-note polyphony make it possible to produce exceptionally 'thick' orchestral textures.
  • 24 bit resolution effects include reverb, chorus, 44 'variation effects', distortion, and graphic EQ.
  • Analogue input allows direct connection of a guitar or microphone for effects processing.
  • 'Performance Mode' allows voices to be combined in up to 4 layers.
  • Large liquid-crystal display panel and advanced user interface for easy operation.

Other Important Specifications

  • Sound Module Modes : XG (Extended General MIDI, TG300B, C/M, DOC, and Performance.
  • Internal Voice : 729 normal voices +21 drum kits.
  • Jacks and Terminals :
    • Front Panel : INPUT jack (stereo 1/4), PHONES jack (stereo mini-pin).
    • Rear Panel : OUTPUT R, L/MONO jacks (RIGHT, LEFT/MONO); DC IN jack; TO HOST terminal; HOST SELECT switch; MIDI IN A/B, MIDI OUT, and MIDI THRU terminals.

Quick Tips

  1. Using the EQ function will improve the overall sound that you may get from your MU80. But remember that some of the other modules and sound cards in the XG range have EQ not as a global effect, but as a per channel variation effect. Therefore your sound may not be the same on other XG units.

  2. Try to get a good reverb that you can use for both vocals and across some of the voices on the MU80 itself, especially for live use, as this will save you having to take out another rack of effects just for this purpose.

  3. Remember that performance mode voices are not part of the XG specification and they will not be used in a generic XG midi file.
